| | Guest | Projector as bathroom TV!!!!
Hi all,
Been reading your forum for a few days and have now joined.
I am currently building a new bathroom and would love a tv.
I know you can buy tilevision, etc but they are a lot of money just for a bath.
I have got my hands on a cheap epson projector which I am thinking of mounting in a cupboard on the otherside of a stud wall and have the lens pointing through a hole covered with a piece of glass, sealed to the wall.
I like the idea that when not in use you cant see the screen.
I play to have the image on the tiles which are large and not glossy.
I know it wont be the perect image put at a total of approx £200 it is this of nothing.

You will probably need to make sure the projector doesn't overheat in a cupboard. Build in some good ventilation! |

Heat build up in cupboard may be a problem.
As will losing the remote under the bubbles. ...PJ

That is one crazy idea, and it must be one big bathroom.
I image it will be alot of work to get it going, but it'll be very cool!

Thanks for all the comments,
This has made me want to do this project.
Just to update further, I have just built by own loft conversion and where I have fitted the new stairs has left an area approx 4' x 2' which cant be used. I plan to put some doors on this area half way up the stairs to have amp, media extender, projector, etc for the bathroom and also the home network router, etc. As far as ventillation goes I can Do what i want. It is against an outside wall so I can add an extrator fan or would just a vent do the job.
Because the projector would be linked to the media centre I can watch TV, Play music, Browse photos, etc all in the bath.
Im not sure why I would want to do all of this as I normally take a shower.
I think I am mad!! | |

i think this could work but you need to consider, SOUND, control, and lighting, throw and screen material

This would be a prime project to track progress on the DIY cinema forum. Would make a change from stud plasterboard walls and access doorways anyway!

I think the heat from the projector will prevent condensation on the glass
It's an interesting idea but I'd recommend you mock things up befoure you poke a hole in the wall to make sure the screen size is sensible.
You also need to think about light control - bathrooms tend to be bright and shiny which isn't ideal!

The reason I am thinking of doing this know is at the moment the wall where the projector would sit behind isn't even there yet. I can build the bathroom around the whole project instead of trying to adapt things.
The lighting is not a problem, they will be standard downlights on a dimmer. The dimmer switch is mounted in the bathroom. Wait a minute lightswitch inside bathroom, ahh must be a pull cord dimmer. err no its a switch proximity switch mounted behind the tiles, lightly touch the tile to switch on/off or move your hand close to the tile and you can adjust the dimmer
Sound would come from the media center extender into a standard amp and then into ceiling speakers.
Any other ideas or potential pitfalls would be very welcome.

i think thats an awesome idea! im planning out my plans for my next house and a/v in the bathroom is definnitely one of them but as you said, £1k plus for a LCD is a bit steep! be very interested to see what your pq is like on the tiles!! my other thought if you have the wall space is to just get a standard tft and mount it behind a perspex panel, not sure what effect that would have on the image.
keep us updated
