16:9 for a PC?

Hi

I'm thinking in buying my first projector, something around 500~600
for what i've read in the forum, the Epson TW10 or the TX-10 would be a
good candidate, but i'm planning to use it connect to a PC all the time
so i'm not quite sure if a 16:9 will be ideal for a PC.

I can resize the resolution in the PC without problem, new drivers
allow you to create custom resolutions, but maybe a standar 4:3 would
be better for me. I just plan to watch dvds from my pc and some doom3 8)
Maybe a xGA will be a better option, but i think they are a little higher
in price 800~1k

What do you think? I'd apreciate any ideas 8)

Regarding the TW10 (which has a good reputation in this forum), for what
what i've read in other forums, looks like the change of getting dead
pixels is quite high comparing with other PJs, do you agree?

I won't be happy with a dead pixel, even if i can use a 3M note to fix it 8)

Keith gave you the Executive Summary. I agree with him but you may want to take a look at this article for a detailed discussion of this decision.

As for dead pixels, try to buy from a dealer offering a Dead Pixel Check (DPC), some do, some for free some for a small charge.

Thanks for your comments, i think i will go for a 4:3 , the 858*484 resolution
of the TW10 is too small to cope with a 800x600, and playing a game
on 640x480 is a sin with my system. (even 800x600 is small, i'm used to play at 1400 or 1600)

16:9... unless you are planning on doing powerpoint presentations it shouldn't even be a consideration as far as home cinema goes

That's because you are playing with your eyes a couple of feet from the monitor. When you are playing 3-4 meters back, it's totaly different.

Don't even think about a 4x3 projector if you are going to be playing DVD's on it regularly. Once you start playing the 2.35:1 and narrower aspect ratio films, the picture is a narrow strip in the middle of your 4:3 projector and huge borders, which on a budget LCD will not be very black.

So, with a 19:6 PJ, the black bars on a 19:6 movie (not 2.35:1)
will be dissapear?, i'm not sure how the pj will deal with a pc image

still, you are starting to convince me 8), maybe i should spend
another 400 more and get a WXGA , maybe the TX-100
will be a good choice, 1280x720 should be ok for a 800x600
pc screen.

BTW, no powerpoint 8), puaggggg, just FPS games

16x9 films that are 1.85:1 aspect ratio will have small if any black bars.
16x9 films that are 2.35:1 aspect ratio will have smaller black bars compared with viewing on a 4:3 display.

if you get a 1280x720 display then simply feed it 1280x720 from your PC . Most newer games will run in 16x9 aspect ratios (Doom3 , Far Cry , HL2 )
