I planned to use a HTPC to connect to a Z3 projector.
I think this can be done using the VGA or DVI output from my gfx card.

Which gives the best results?
1) VGA (PC) - VGA (Projector)
2) DVI PC) - HDMI (Projector) ...if this can be done

DVI is better on my TFT so I am guessing the same but just wondered on anyones experience here. If option 2 how much is the cable? and is it worth it?

Any other tips for this setup. Is the Z3 a good choice for this ?

Generally digital is better than analog and worth doing whenever possible, and yes a DVI source can feed an HDMI receiver you just need a DVI->HDMI cable or adapter if you already have a DVI cable.

A 2m cable costs around £30 from Keene, who are a good supplier, if you use their Search feature on "HDMI" you'll find a number of cables and adapters depending on your needs.

Yes, I've had a great picture from my Z3 using a dvi-hdmi cable driven from a Radeon 9800 Pro in my PC - just remember to:
a) select HDMI input or Auto - took me a while to realise that was why I wasn't getting a picture
b) reduce the overscan value to 0 or it will look a bit 'indistinct', particularly with text.

I have done this buit do not find it as rich in colour as through VGA. Any ideas?

In fact 'indistinct' is how I would describe it. But the overscan value just meant I was missing the sides of my viewing area. Setting to 0 as you suggested sorted that but did not relaly make it more distinct !

Personally I definitely (maybe 5% better to me) prefer the HDMI image over VGA but yes VGA is a bit softer and does look good with less than perfect transfers but if you try something pixel perfect like "the incredibles" then i think you will agree HDMI is the way to go. You can change colour palette of HDMI - have you followed some of Rones posts on this account?

Now has anyone used an S-Video cable? I have a 10m one im thinking of connecting up between a cable box and the Z3. Or i could get a Scart - VGA lead from keene I will probably end up with both but does anyone have any views? (i already have far too many unused cables so someone stop me if i need to be stopped!!!). Regards

PS If anyone needs a DVI-HDMI adapter I still have one left in the classifieds
