Jvc dla-hd350 vs optoma hd33

i know JVC DLA-HD350 was about 3500 pounds when new but that was like 4 years ago and that optoma hd33 is a current projector and retails for about 1000 pounds.

thing is i can get a JVC DLA-HD350 for about 1000 pounds now but i want to know if it is worth is. is it outdated or is the picture still better then the current 1000 projectors like the hd33

thx

The JVC will blow the Optoma out of the water, no contest (epecially if you have a treated room). I've had a couple of Optoma projectors (last being the HD20) and the HD350 is just in another league entirely. The only reason you should even consider the HD33 is if you're after 3D capability.

Time has nothing to do with it, the Optoma is a budget machine, it's all about the engineering, components and build quality, which the JVC excels at. I doubt the HD33 even has glass lenses, let alone motorised lens shift and focus.

As for black levels this is what JVC are renowned for, a budget DLP machine cannot hope to come anywhere close. Even if you were deciding between the more expensive Optoma HD83 and the HD350, I'd still say go with the JVC.

I haven't seen a plasma in years and am not familiar with that model so can't really say. I seem to remember people comparing them favourably with Pioneer Kuros though, which I understand to be highly though of.

Like I say I have no first hand experience, I just seem to recall that being mentioned. However you should note that absolute blacks are simply not possible via projection due to the nature of the technology. That said I've never heard anyone say they're disappointed with JVC's black levels.

Remember too that you need to have black walls, floor and ceiling to really get the most out of a projector. However, I don't and yet still enjoy the result (and did with my old HD350), but I'm planing some room improvements myself. The darker the decor then the better the projected image will look, but it depends on your expectations and whether it's a dedicated or living room installation as to how much compromise you can make.

[See also the increasing contrast thread for more information].

Lamps are still available for the HD350 as they used the same lamp in the later HD550/950 as well. The older JVC HD1 is still supported for lamps, so I don't think this is an issue to be concerned about.

No... the HD350 is the replacement for the HD1, so they improved a few things such as better contrast (15,000:1 HD1 verses 30,000:1 HD350) and a little brighter. I can't remember if the HD1 has a remote controlled zoom, shift and focus but the HD350 does have. However, if you find a used HD1 for a good price, then it's still worth considering as they probably won't drop much more in price so you could sell it later on and upgrade as funds allow.

The HD350 is well overpriced (unless it's brand new perhaps) as I wouldn't expect more than about £650 for my old HD350 now.

At the moment I'm thinking that I'll just keep it as a backup, but I'll keep my eye on the wanted adverts incase I change my mind.

Not sure that the VW60 is as good as the HD350, so IMVHO it's a little dear still, but maybe someone else can comment.

i had an hc5000 as my first projector, nice sharp picture but not very good black level. next i got a sharp xzv21000 which is very similar to the hd1 and it was considerably better on the black level front. now have an x30 which is better still.

As you are not interested in 3D, I would eliminate the TW6000 from the equation. Regarding the Optoma and JVC, there are many pros and cons of both, and it depends where your priorities are.
