Who wants to visit my cinema? F.O.C

Hi Folks,

The worlds smallest commercial cinema is a 22 seat cinema in Nottingham.

Screen22.co.uk

I am putting the finishing the touches to the refit and am very happy to invite forum members over to watch a film. F.O.C

The cinema has recently had a complete face lift and new AV equipment.

116 inch curved, acoustically transparent, 2.4:1 screen.
JVC projector
Ananmorphic lens
Klipsch THX Speakers
BK Subwoofers.
Antimode subwoofer DSP
Sonos
PS3
Harmony remote

and if that does tempt you I can tell you that the seats are very comfortable.

The AV setup allows for easy exchange or addition of products.

Firstly I would like to invite members over to Nottingham to watch a film and ask as many questions as they like. Free of charge.

So If you are considering a JVC projector or BK monolith or just want to see a working CIH system please introduce yourself.

I would also like to use the Cinema for equipment tests. For example a Bluray player shootout. I happy to donate my personal time to hosting forum evenings if I find out enough people are interested.

Please note I am not an employee of the cinema, i do not stand to make any money from this gesture and I have asked permission and advice before posting the start of this thread. I am a newish member but have been into AV for about the last 20 years.

As part payment for designing and fitting the cinema, I struck a deal with the cinema owners for a small amount of personal access and use. Please do not contact the cinema directly. They wont have a clue what you are talking about.

My motives are genuine and all I ask is that you give me your assessment of the performance. I want the opportunity to tweak the performance to get it just right before it opens its doors to paying customers. ( I have never built a cinema with more than 6 seats before).Who better to ask than the kind people at AVforums.

Well ta ta for now, hope we speak soon.

Jeff Why

Hi Jeff

Welcome to the forums and for extending your kind invitation.I am always up for seeing other members home cinemas and have had quite a few round at my place to see my setup.

I am in Wolverhampton area so not so far away so I may well pop over for a screening in the near future. What movies are you going to be showing and what times/days are available. Is it possible to bring a friend when attending.

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith,

thanks for the welcome.

The more the merrier. bring a friend.

I think the best bet will be to put it to the vote. Lets get a group together, ask what people would like to see and take it from there. You get to make the first suggestion I guess.

Time wise , that will depend on the group. I was thinking a weekday evening probably.

Thanks a million

Jeff

Jeff is the film choice limited to what is currently available on dvd/bluray or films that are on general release at the cinema at this time.

Weekday evening would be fine by me.

Film choice is restricted to normal DVD/Bluray release.

Active 3D glasses are on order.

Really glad people are intrested. It isnt just a one night deal, if there is enough people I will put on as many evenings as are required. Coach trips welcome

Projector is a JVC X30 paired with a Prismasonic HD6000r

I have a feeling you guys will love the subwoofers.

Two subwoofers, custom versions of the BK Monolith plus named "deena" finished in "Batman" black.

One sub sits at the front and deals with the main bulk of the soundtrack, certainly the main musical and rythermical part of the soundtrack 80hz to 30hz ish.

The sub at the back is tuned from 30hz down and is used just to offer that tinglely waft of magical sub bass.

The subs are passive, the amp units live in the kit cupboard. This means that cinema visitors cant adjust the sub settings but also means that if an amp or driver blew all is not lost. Amp and speaker are reconfigarable in seconds so as not to result in the embarresment of a "no show"

"Here at NASA we dont take chances, we double up on everything" - Name that film .

Well I double up on the double up

I will post some pics just as soon as the paint has dried.

Thanks for the intrest folks, i was worried I would get no replys at all.

Jeff

Well as we have a 3D option Tron may be a good movie or certainly something in the Action genre with plenty of LFE to demonstrate the low end sub action.

The new Mission impossible or War Horse could also be worth considering although I don't know what aspect ratio they are in, but whatever you do make them bluray as we don't like straight dvd's anymore do we

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows is 3D that could be a goodie.

Anyone else got any suggestions.

Any Tony Scott film usually has trouser flapping bass. Although I think he favours 16:9 ? For picture I think.

Folks I want to ask ask some advice, as you know I am a neewbie.

I am guessing it is seen as poor taste to start multiple threads, what is best way to invite some of the subwoofer guys over.

Last thing I want to do is get kicked off for repeating contect all over the place.

Any advice greatfully recieved.

BTw if you get 5 mins check out my IB build

I would love to come and see this but it's quite a trek for me, I will have a think depending on date, time etc.

As for the Sub guys, I think a fair few of them will look in this section as well. I would check with a mod re more of the same threads or a link to this one?

For a good film to watch I would suggest the new Mission Impossible, great soundtrack and bass.

OK thankyou good advice,

You guys have some blimin impressive kit, puts my efforts to shame.

Not seen mission impossible, on the IB sub setup "Inception". the scene where leo falls backwards into the bathtub sounds ( and feels ) trem-flippin- mendous.

This sounds like a fantastic idea, it's great to see more and more people who have a passion for home cinema. Your system sounds like a beastly setup and i'd love to hear the subs!

I'm in London so it would be quite far for me to go but I will certainly consider it if a time and date is to be arranged.

If there are any comic book/superhero fans out there then Ironman 1 or 2, Thor etc, etc could be a good showing both of which have some great low end action

Welcome Jeff

Looking forward to seeing some pics of the cinema, it might give me an idea to put a box-office kiosk at my room entrance

As a lead-in to the trilogy finale, what about a Dark Knight screening ?

Inception as a whole has a truly epic soundtrack.

Shame some people are so far away but appreciate you posting anyway, makes it all worthwhile

batman - now that is a very good idea

So far I have spotted a panamorph and aussimorphic lens and lorry loads of M&K speakers. I have had a nosey on here but had no idea the kit level was this impressive.

You guys are very lucky, or hard working but either way that is some truly enviable equipment.

I would actually be interested to doing a lens shootout actually.

I know that lens memory settings are great fun and gaining in popularity but you cant beat a lens in my opinion. Anyway

Just want to say thanks to all for making me feel very welcome.

Jeff

War horse it could be then, if enough people vote

Cinema used to be called "the Screen Room" i think there is still a youtube video knocking around about it. It is the one your thinking of in hockley.

Changed hands about 12 months or so ago.

Nottingham is a good night out, anyone want to make a night of it ?

Agree with Nottingham being a good night out !! There's plenty of bars 'round Hockley as well. When are you thinking of holding the event?

War Horse would be great...not seen it yet !

Hi Jeff,

I'm in Nottingham, I'd heard of the screening room before but wasn't aware of the new plans for it. It sounds great, I'll def check it out at some point.

Any idea when it plans to open up?

Nottingham is a fab night out.!!!

When is Warhorse out on Bluray?

Not sure when Screen22 is open for cinema releases but it open for private bookings as we speak.!

Am thinking of hosting in a few weeks time. but will post dates just as soon as I confirm availability with owners of S22.

Gladiator has a very solid soundtrack but the picture is a bit odd from scence to scene, or maybe just the transfer I have,

Just while were on the subject everyone does realize that the best three films ever made are Arlington road, Matchstick men and Moon. yes?

So glad you like it. To be honest I have the most fab contact. A worksop in Nottingham that will build anything you ask. I design, draw it up in CAD and then hand it over to them guys, there work and level of finish is sublime.

Still never heard anything like these subs and anyone who visits this house is blown away which makes the whole thing worth while.

The best thing about this setup is it didnt cost as much as most people think it would have.

Diy subs can cost peanuts to make, a £1k DIY effort can blow away a £3k+ professionally made sub if designed right using a quality driver and amp.

totally agree, the other thing is that the sub can be themed, integrated and design exactly as you want it. I am currently getting two subs sprayed in candy apple red to complement a chaps electric guitar. As stated previously the subs a S22 are in what I call "batman black" that kind of tough yet rubbery black you get on old nokia mobiles, not everyone cup of tea, but thats the point.

By the way, if you dont like my design thats cool. I cant stand middle of the road and boring, no one ever say "iam not sure". People either love my stuff or hate it, I love that.

"oh i didnt notice it!" simply will not do!
