My CRT blacks are great and the motion is very smooth.
Just have to wait for it to warm up to get the best from it...

My brother in law had a single chip dlp but I saw the rainbows and its blacks were a dark grey / green. Motion was good though...

It is on my agenda to keep looking for a digital that compares well both for blacks and motion.

I'm sensitive to the iris used on some projectors too..

A while back I did see a JVC 350 and 750 and they were both reasonable the 750 being noticeably better with blacks although during the demo at very low hours the 350 blew its bulb!!

I have seen a number of CRT's but not for about ten years and rememebered thinking they looked good but was unsure how they stacked up.

I suppose the upside to a simple projector is uniform black level. Even idf a projectors black level performance is poor atleast it is regular and even accross the screen as appossed to some LED tv's etc which can have bright spots etc.

I am currently using a 350 for my training seminars and its always the last thing to get boxed up at the end of the seminar. I think it is a tremendous PJ. very quiet, superb picture, fantastically easy to place thanks to throw ratio and lens shift and I know it shouldnt matter but.......its pretty too.

J

I think to a certain extend lamp hours are like miles on the clock of a car, usually the less the better however there is no measumment for how well the thing has been looked after.

We all know how to look after a projector lamp, its not rocket science, of cource there will always be the 1 in 1000 that has a fault or alternativly bad luck.

The Quad has fortunately not closed and the press hyped up the threat that it would close.
The fact is the council are cutting funding over the next few years and it is hoped the Quad can become self supporting by the time the funding is cut off.

As we all know in this time span the council could change its mind and other sources of funding found...

.
The CRT PJ has a few followers still who prefer its picture.
Against it are the size and weight and the setup usually put many off.
The other consideration is of parts availability and any repairs although there is Curt Palme in the US who will repair and ship worldwide.

You are welcome to come and see my CRT in action...

I'm down the road in Leics so not that far to travel. Would definitely be interested in seeing a high end setup. No particular vote for a movie but I watched Tintin with my little one this afternoon in 3D on my home cinema and the motorcycle chase scene was ace.

Oh, and the NASA quote? Armageddon?

Awesome news,

A few people have mentioned that scene and as a show off piece it might work very well.

Totally correct film quote . I see nobody has argued with my top three films yet

I would find it hard to chose any three films for the best three ever made.It would change from day to day and as my mood changes as there are so many movies that I find great.I am afraid none of your three would even appear in my top 50 just as my top 3 probably would not appear in your's.

Today it would be:

Jaws
Ben Hur
Lawrence of Arabia

I now have Ben Hur totally restored and in bluray and the other two will be out in June and Sept also suitably restored on Bluray.

Having just upgraded my home cinema with an Epson 9000 and a 110" grey screen, I'd be well up for figuring out where else I need to spend money to improve it further!!! Sounds like my Rel T1 sub is going to be feeble in comparison.

Please count me in, date depending (have to work away from home a fair bit!)

As for films, i'm easy. MI:4 is great, War Horse not seen yet - always love a good thriller, action or sci-fi.

To be honest my top 5 films always change. Flight of the navigator is always there somewhere though.

Remastered blurays are wonderful, I was sceptical at first but some of the results I have seen are sublime.

So sorry I have not updated in a while.

I am planning an upgrade before the visit, am swapping to a Epson EH-TW9000.

This is mainly an "upgrade" to improve the 3D performance.

New projector should arrive a week tomorrow so will post some available dates just as soon as its installed.

Will take some pics at the same time.

Sorry to neglect in the meantime.

Will keep ya posted

Thanks all

Have you purchased the Epson yet. Whilst it may be an upgrade for 3D, it is most likely going to be a downgrade for 2D (based on assumed room conditions).

Have you tested the JVC in 3D. Although it is not the best at 3D, it is not that bad.

Thanks for the input, am inclined to agree on all points you make - however because of the length of time the projector is switched on (on a Saturday it can be running for 3 films back to back) I am chewing up lamps. Lamp brightness is dropping off so significantly that I have had to replace lamp twice already!! its less than 12 months old.

Should be covered by Epson warranty and hoping the continual use rating should be better.

Am going to do an "A" and "B" comparison back to back to be sure 2D will be good enough.

Wasting my time or good idea??

Lamp time and running cost was a consideration I had thought of, but seeing most commercial cinemas run at levels of less than 10ftl, the JVC should hold its own.

I would check the wording on the Epson warranty, I am pretty sure commercial use will be excluded from the lamp warranty. Lamps should last longer though.

Good idea to check side by side though

Spoke to Epson ad they seem happy enough, apparently the promo idea started with office projectors and spread to domestic projectors. They are to confirm by email but so far so good. Will keep you posted on that one.

2D picture is fine but dont have the headroom needed for convincing 3D.

Am pressuming will have to reel in the Epson a fair bit and then ramp up for 3d giving me flexiblity and headroom i need.

iam hoping anyway, proof in the pudding and all that...

That's good about the bulb warranty. There are certainly other manufacturers that would not honor that. If you get stuck getting the confirmation you want, let me know and I will try and use my contacts to get it.

The Epson will give you headroom for 3D, so that will be good. What have you done about glasses? Did you get some for the JVC. 22 pairs (+a couple of spares) is not cheap.

If you have finances, running both projectors may be an option. JVC for 2D and Epson for 3D?

Thanks for the kind offer, gratefully appreciated

"bedroom" ? lol

Your dead right about the cost of goggles, again thankfully the cost of the epson glasses is less than the JVC.

cant afford to use both unfortunately and other people might struggle to drive the system correctly.

cant argue with the advise.

Hey Folks,

So sorry I have been away, holiday then a recent trip to download festival.

(possibly the best worst experience of my life.)

Well the new blu ray player has had a tremedous effect on the sound quality, unbelievable difference.

Picture wise the results from the Epson 9000 are breath taking, honestly think this PJ is the best performer at the pricepoint, build and finish do not overwhelm but its not ugly, its just not a JVC X3 when it comes to build. I have been waiting on the front firing seperate IR emitter for 3D to arrive. Its here and will get a chance to fit before the weekend is out I hope. Tested the 3D without the emitter and coverage is patchy but when its working the 3D is blimim brilliant. I have just a slight focusing issue to resolve when using the Prismasonic lens, JVC was sipler to setup because of things like motorised lens shift and focus which the Epson doesent have. Proving to be a pig of a job as a one person job but will soon have it cracked and ready for your good selves to see.

If i said evening of 29th June would that suit anyone?

let me know, thanks for patience

all the best

Jeff
