if just using emulsion paint try to trial patch some

I did some pj screen stands here, remember Keith, which were given 3 coats of the blackest matt black paint I could find and against the Devore they might as well be white .

That said you can`t see them when the lights are down and the films on

Seriously whatever you do to minimise the reflective surfaces will go towards producing better image contrast and black levels

Well hopefully the ceiling will be the only reflective part of the room. Im going to cover the equipment stand and speakers with stick on velour to minimize reflection.
Think the landlord will have a fit about the curtains as it is without me attaching frames of devore on the ceiling as well.
That being said if there is a lot of reflection i may put one strip of devore above the screen on the ceiling.

If you can do that for about 3ft-4ft that will make a very good difference along with the other things you are going to do.

As to paint I don't know which make matt paint is least reflective maybe some one else will know.

Looking at the photo comparing matt paint to the devore I'm wondering if it's worth painting the ceiling at all?
Would I be better off putting the curtains up and just putting one length of devore across the ceiling above the screen and leaving the rest of the ceiling white as it is now?

I put the Devore out to 1.5 mts on the ceiling, then the rest of the ceiling is emulsioned in a dark ruby red colour, Maraschino Mocha 2 its called, pics on my website if you want to take a look.

you can see even when doing the ceiling dark where it lights up like hell when the Devore stops and the paint starts, not as much as white obviously though

My suggestion.. Cover the whole room with Devore! Once you start you just can't stop . Beats painting and if you make wooden frames it's great for holding acoustic treatments as its acoustically transparent.

Would love to but its a rented house so dont think i can get away with it to be honest. Trying to get the best effect without changing the room too much. Plus devore is quite expensive

Ok, am finally getting my stuff together to make a start on this. I'm waiting on a new projector screen so didn't want to start until that's in situ but it hasn't yet arrived so I'll just go ahead and leave the screen wall to last. I'm ordering 30m of the stuff this week, would like to get most of it up over the following weekend. Does anybody want a metre or two whilst I'm ordering (and take advantage of bulk discount)?

Clearing out my loft ready for the move and found a load of black fabric which looks perfect for the ceiling above my screen in the new cinema room.

Bonus!

Glad this thread is still going :smashing:

I am still watching films in my nicely velvet covered room, I have damp problems last years which meant taking everything down and having builders in

It's now back in use and I am still amazed at the picture quality I get from my old calibrated JVC HD100. It will be upgraded at some point, but I simply can't knock the image quality. There is virtually nothing that annoys me about it. The whole system has remained virtually unchanged for the last 2 1/2 years

If you can make a moveable system with black out bars it really adds to the image quality.

I've introduce my new black curtain system into my room, which quickly and easily turns my viewing room into a "black box" for movie watching and then disappears behind the existing curtains. It's almost done, so...pictures and my impressions to come soon. Early impressions are amazing.

What would anybody think of this felt fabric Black Handicraft Felt ?

The adhesive backed version would be pretty convenient for just sticking directly to the ceiling and walls. I guess the devore isn't that much more expensive, but when you factor in how you'd apply it, it could add up. Can you get the devore adhesive backed?

You should get a free sample from them and Whaley's (supplier of Devore) so you can compare but personally, based on the previous posts and original thread I'd go with Devore. Check out some of the pics for how big a difference it makes. I'm going to apply mine, I think, by stapling (black staples). Devore isn't adhesive backed.

I just bought my Devore! I've guessed the amount and went for 30m, I suspect that's way too much but better safe than sorry. Once delivered I'll do a bit in the evenings

Don`t worry about ordering too much, you can always make a Devore suit and sit in your Devore room too watch the films, it really is black

see here

I now have 30m of Devore, two large black rugs from Ikea (thanks Allan for that tip) and a nice coffee table waiting to be assembled sitting in the cinema room. Got the wood ready, though will likely need more. One quick question - did you all merely tack the wood together or should I reinforce the joins using an L shaped bracket or something?

/isn't a practical fellow

depends what wood your using

my walls panels are extremely light using 2" architrave so I mitred the corners, and glued and stapled them.

the acoustic panels are 3"x1" timbers which were piloted and screwed

Ok, one more question :-D Did you make the panels the width of the Devore (leaving enough to wrap around the frame of course) or did you find you needed to them thinner to enable tautness of the material?

I would cut them slightly oversize then trim the excess off after its stapled up .

So would I, its quite stretchy and may give a little over time so its best to have something to grab hold of to re-tension if needed

do any of you use your devore'd rooms as anything other than dedicated rooms? I'm wondering if they are usable in the daytime, or with the lights on, or are they still too dark?

Have half an eye on our converted single garage, which is currently a sort of playroom/spare room. We already have a sofabed about halfway along (about 8ft), and toy storage behind it.

PJ is currently in the lounge, but improving contrast in there is a non-starter I think. Big room and very white.

Hi Richard

personally I don`t, my dark room to be honest is not suitable for anything other than watching a film in, its simply too dark.

it is a basement mind you and the window has got a blackout blind permanently down, however the room next to it, big room very white, also a basement room, is very suitable as a living room and you can socialise in their no problem and it has a screen which produces what i`d say to be quite good contrast.

close up

so you can leave your room as it it and still achieve a very watchable image

That non batcaved room looks good Al. Once I've finished restoring my car I might look into changing to one of these screens as I've never managed to make a better bat tent, so these days I just watch my matt white screen in the room as it is (75: ANSI contrast and all).

Actually I rewatched 'Ronin' on BluRay this weekend (it was the first ever DVD I watched about 11/12 years ago and I've never seen it on the 'big screen') and really enjoyed it despite my less than optimal room conditions.

Hi Kelvin

thanks for the comments, the room certainly does get some praise from visitors and people coming for a demo as well, this screen is a revelation and is actually being promoted by some who are sick of me going on about it (just having a bit of fun)

and I get what you mean abouts older films on the "big screen", for me it makes them, well some of them much better
