Cool Epson EH-TW9000/w Owners Thread

Time for 9000 owners to start airing there views and experience of this particular PJ. There is some limited Videos on You Tube. Its model ID in the USA is the 5010.
Since this particular PJ is getting rave reviews else where I'm puzzled as to why so little is appearing on this Forum.
I confess that due to my requirements eg no bat cave & not likely to be allowed to have one, this PJ seems to meet my needs namely short throw/brightness/warrenty (a class leader?) and finally looks both PQ/2d/3d. The PJ it's self appears a nice design. Love the forward cooling vents.
Over to you Guys 'N' Girls.

Cool

I think you are correct lastshadow. The difference being an anamorphic lens and wireless??
I had in mind the Home cinema 5010 and the equivalent European model. Either way Chris is probably right. A time of to much Xmas dinner to be bothered to lurk on forums.
The idea of a well functioning wireless PJ sounds most enticeing.
We will wait and see. I have to get through New Year followed by a Med Cruise. On my return the ardouse task of demoing and seting up our first PJ begins
Cheers Blue

Not sure if this is correct. As I understand it

US Ver. UK Ver.
HC3010 = TW6000,
HC3010 e = TW6000 W,
HC5010 = TW9000 and
HC5010 e = TW9000 W
HC6010 = not sure if there is UK equivalent

The 6010 is the only one that will work with an anamorphic lens but is only available through specialised dealers

Talking

I have a 9000, didn't bother with the wireless, and now have about 20 odd hours on it.

My initial thoughts are based on a rough set up with the projector firing onto a white wall.

3d - has been excellent. I have tried it with various Sky3d programmes and various blurays and to date I have seen no ghosting.

2d - Black levels are very good and I havent bothered tweaking much yet, I did increase the colour temp to 7000 which gives me a better balanced image.

In terms of light output I have been using it on "eco" setting and even with lights on I'm getting a good image which is easily viewable. Obiously I'm talking of mood lighting and not full lights shining on the screen.

For everyones info, I note in the instruction manual it does show fixing for an anamorphic lens and in operation there is an option in the screen aspect menu to select this lens.

If anyone has a specific question feel free to ask.

Thanks for your overview. It would be an interesting to hear your further thoughts once you get a few more hours viewing.
Is fan noise an issue and how far is the projector from the screen?
Did you demo it against anything else?
Thanks Blue

Fan noise is virtually non existent in Eco mode, does get noisier in normal. The projector currently sits on a table next to me and I'm not aware of fan noise.
You do hear the iris in extreme light to dark screen changes but as I said it is next to me and if you put it on a ceiling mount it wouldn't be an issue. Just watched Aliens on blu ray tonight and not a problem, in fact I've seen bits of the film not seen before on my plasma.

The projector is about 3 to 4 metres from the wall and I am using a image size of 2.2m in width.

I tried the Sony 30 and the jvc before I bought this. I had tried these against the Epson 5500 which i was looking at earlier last year. There was a slight lag on fast moving scenes with the 5500 which wasn't visible on the other two but I did see ghosting on both of the others in 3d so decided to wait for next gen and like you saw the us reviews on the new Epsons.

Obviously didn't get chance to A B test these but I've been pleased so far with my purchase.

Hi Chris

first impressions of the 9000 are its a cracker of a pj, especially in the new room.

very detailed punchy 2d image with loads of sharpness straight out of the box and as yet i`ve not seen any crosstalk or ghosting at all with 3d, so far tried Cars 2 and Avatar which we all know is good anyway, its the brightest 3d image I remember seeing so far as well.

very impressed, also I really like the finish on the case as well, looks very slick and well made.

lens covers seems to operate as good as any as well, i`m still not sure the lens adjustment is perfect but once it is set thats it, like a mirror on a car really

cheers

Hi Chris

just done a shootout/demo with the Sony HW30 and even the client said its a hard choice between the two models with 2d, but the 3d on the Epson was excellent with no ghosting or crosstalk seen at all and also very very impressed with the brightness.

looking forward to Steves review of the Epson 9000, I think this really will put the cat amongst the pidgeons from what we`ve seen so far.

hi

my view is that crosstalk and ghosting is much dependant on which film you play , ie avatar and cars next to none to the other end of the scale where my bloody valentine is terrible .
and to some point person dependant too , where i can spot it themrs and sone dont know what it is so just get on with enjoying the film
i may just have to pop over for a peek at some point

It is true that there are a multitude of factors that can cause crosstalk but there's no doubt that the 3D on the TW6000 was excellent, even if 3D Blu-rays that I know to be problematic.

I agree with this 100% Steve & Chris

i`m also inclined to think that even different disc pressings of the same film can show ghosting to a different degree.

But so far with the Epson we have seen none, I`ve all manner of discs here, not My Bloody Valentine though unfortunatley, so maybe Chris you could bring that one with you and any others you want as well.

cheers Allan

I hope its not like a car mirror. I drive my wife's car and she keeps changing the settings that I like. Now if nonsense carries over to our PJ lens there will be hell to pay!
Look forward to AVF doing the usual excellent reviews. I might just buy the 9000 before the end of January and take advantage of the £100 cash back.

I've read mention of a "TW9000 LIGHT POWER EDITION" in Germany that comes with a filter over the lens.

Is there any more info available and does this differ to the UK model?

just had a quick look and it has the same spec as the uk, in terms of lumens 2400 etc see link Epson EH-TW9000 Lightpower Edition - Epson
I also saw they refer to the older tw5500 as a light power edition as well so my guess is it's just a name.

In this test of it they show a filter. I was curious as to the benefits and if the UK model also came with it.

Ah, now i know what you mean. This isn't over the lens but an internal filter which apparently filters the light into it's component parts, i.e. RGB.
Standard on the UK model.

Thanks for your reply

I read the bit about the internal filter but there was also a bit with a picture showing an optical type filter to fit over the lens of about 12cm diameter.

It was that I was asking about. Any idea?

To be honest no.
I see the filter you mention and there is no obvious place to put it on mine and there is no reference to it either in my manual or an earlier generic one i downloaded from Epson europe. I did a search and the only thing i could find was on the american forums asking the same question and linking back too the german article.

Cine4home are not your average reviewer or dealer. As you can see from some of their other reviews/tests (have a look at the X70 one), they actually take a lot of the projectors apart to look at the internals etc.

They have previously made internal modifications to projectors to increase contrast etc.

Thus I would suspect that the filter you are seeing is a generic (photographic) filter that they have discovered to work well with the TW9000 due to its light output etc. It maybe worth asking the question of Cine4Home. They may be able to point you in the direction, or sell you the filter. As for attaching to the projector, it may just be a tape/blutack job

That is correct. I have a 'light power' edition (bought in the netherlands) and it comes with an extra lens. It's for CinemaScope/Anamorf movies
