Sanyo Z2: discoloured patch

My Sanyo Z2, bought secondhand six months ago, has developed a discoloured patch in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Though it's barely noticeable on most programme material, light backgrounds show it up. I have a suspicion that this is due to the unit overheating: I've had to position it with less than the recommended clearance at the top and the rear, though the sideways clearance (where the ventilation output is) is very generous.

I had something similar with my previous projector, a well-used Panasonic AE100. The cure was the replacement of the entire optic block. Has the Z2 been around long enough yet for it to be known if this is the same problem? Is it something which affects all LCD projectors?

On the AE100 it was a simple matter to call up a service menu and project a series of single-colour blank screens. Is there a similar facility on the Z2?

Many thanks.

Hi Bert.

Are you sure it's not just a dust blob..............Z2s are relatively prone......

Kramer, thanks for the thought. Dust blobs are almost always circular and well-defined (if you focus on them) aren't they? This is a right-angled triangular area which peters out at the hypotoneuse edge.

But just in case, I'll try focusing on the patch and see if I can sharpen it up. And I suppose it might not hurt to open up the case and squirt some air around...

Bert,

It could be one of the polarising filters as these often become discoloured when subjected to heat or when they get old. I have seen this often on Sony VW projectors.
It's often the blue polarising filter to go first.

Jeff,

Thanks for that. If it is one of the polarising filters, presumably it's not too big or expensive a repair. Do you know if I have to go through a dealer, or can I contact Sanyo UK direct?

Bert, I presume your Z2 is still under warranty.

If you have the original receipt I would get in touch with dealer who supplied the unit or Sanyo themselves.

Jeff,

Annoyingly, the original receipt seems to have temporarily gone into hiding; I can't be sure if the Z2 is still under guarantee or not. Is the period one or two years?
