Hi,

I recently watched a demo of a Screenplay 7205 via a Tag DVD player hooked up in component connection. It was projected onto a 12ft screen from about 15-20ft. The DVD playing was Pearl harbour.

This was the first time I have viewed a projector with a non CG film (Ice Age etc.) and I noticed that forground images like people were sharp and had good flesh tones etc. but people running about in the (distant) background had a faint compressed jpeg type halo around them and the general (background) image was quite grainy.

As I said I don't know much about projectors but I was really dissapointed and for £5k I really expected better. I could live with the graininess but not the image 'halo' effect on distant moving objects.

The guys in the shop (Sevenoaks in Cambridge) were raving about the picture, personally I thought they must be blind but maybe my lack of experience has led me to expect to much from DLP.

Was the source DVD the problem?
Are projectors really this bad?
How much do I need to spend to get a 'good' picture?

It sounds like a setup issue as what you described is not normal.
You have not seen a projector in its best light and it would be a shame if you were put off by this experience as you can get an excellent projector at that price point or even less.

I was hoping that was the case, do I have to travel to sussex to get a good demo or is there somewhere closer???

Are Sevenoaks a bit too 'Highstreet' to get the best advice, home installation etc?

Alternatively what is being described may just be the limitations of SD video onto such a large display. Generally SD still gives excellent "talking head" shots on large screens, but anything in mid to long distance is relatively blurred due to lack of resolution.

You're spot on John. I have a lot of HD material on a Uvem HCPC and a JVC
D-Theater Hi Def player and the detail in the wide shots is so much better than standard DVD.

A recent press release from Columbia Tristar said they were plannng to start releasing films on HD DVD in the third quarter of 2005.

Errrrr, are you mad? This is a sensational product in every way . I think you need to rethink your definition of a 'good' picture
And there's me looking to buy a £1000 Hitachi pj-tx100. That'll do for me
