Unhappy Epson emp-tw10h vga-rgb problem

Hi Guys,

I am new to this site and was wondering if somebody could help? I have recently bought an Epson EMP-TW10H projector and I have hooked it up to my Windows 7 Media Centre PC via an S-Video cable to my ATI Radeon HD Pro 2400 graphics card.

I read on this site that the projected image will look much better via a VGA->RGB cable so I bought this cable from Ebay:

1.5M VGA SVGA TO 3 RCA YPbPr COMPONENT MALE CABLE LEAD on eBay (end time 13-Aug-10 04:39:48 BST)

My ATI Radeon HD Pro 2400 graphics card does not have a VGA port (only DVI, HDMI and S-Video) but my motherboard (Intel G965 with 965 Express) does so I enabled the graphics device through my BIOS (which is normally disabled when another graphics card is plugged into the motherboard). I plugged an old CRT monitor into the VGA port to make sure a signal was being sent (which it was).

I then downloaded the latest drivers for the Intel 965 Express on-board graphics using Windows 7.

I set the resolution to 800x600 @ 60hz refresh rate and powered up the projector, setting the input mode to A (RGB-Video).

The projector displays a blue screen with the message:

'Not Supported.

H: 11.24khz V:410:45hz

Source: Input A (RGB-Video)'

I guessed that this was a problem with the computers graphics settings rather than the projector so I tried a few different resolutions and refresh rates ranging from 640x480 @ 60hz to 800 x 600 @ 72hz.

I still cannot get the projector to display anything other than the blue screen. I noticed that in switching between the resolutions and refresh rates that the vertical refresh rate on the message I described above changed.

Does anybody know what I am doing wrong or exactly what settings on the Intel 965 Express would allow the projector to display the computers image?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Ian

I have tried it with my other PC

I just plugged the VGA cable into my older PC and the same problem occurs.

However, while Windows XP was loading (up to the point where I selected my login name) an image was displayed on the screen. When I selected my logon name and Windows XP loaded the same problem occurred. I tried a few different resolutions and a flickery image was displayed. However, I still cannot get the projector to display a proper image.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Welcome to the CRT section of the forums

If I have read this correctly you have bought a component cable and it will not work as an RGB.

I think you would be better sourcing a DVI to VGA cable

Hi,

Thanks for the reply!

Will the DVI to VGA cable give a picture that is as good as VGA to RGB?

From what I understand RGB is the best?

flealine,

DVI is simply a way of connecting; as is VGA and RGB.

Firstly, for the purpose of this discussion you can think of RGB and VGA as the same thing. There are technical differences, but there not so important for what you are doing. The are both ways of connecting an analogue signal. Just choose the correct type of plug end to suit your source or projector.

Just so we are absolutely clear though, what you are calling RGB isn't what we (and the rest of the industry) know as an RGB signal. The picture in your link might have plugs that are coloured Red Green and Blue, but it is definitely not RGB. What you have there is Component which is the next stage up from S-video.

This is commonly known as a VGA plughttp://www.screencapturenews.com/wp-...or-150x150.jpg

The barrel connectors in this image are BNCs. The five of them together make what is commonly known as an RGBHV connection. It is possible to have an RGB connection with three or four wires. Your Epson can take a 4-wire connection (RGBcS) where the yellow socket is used for the timing signal. It's simpler though to use the VGA socket http://www.rgbcanada.com/xcart/images/D/d_2649-04.jpg

As you know, a DVI socket can be used for analogue or digital signal. If you are going to be using a cable with a VGA plug on the other end then the DVI signal is going to be analogue too. i.e. DVI-A to VGA. In other words, the cable can't convert from digital to analogue or A to D.

So, your question "Will the DVI to VGA cable give a picture that is as good as VGA to RGB?" The answer is they're both the same. DVI to VGA is an analogue connection, as is VGA to RGB, as is DVI to RGB. They're all the same.

DVI-I to VGA Cable arrived this morning

Chris,

Thanks for the detailed explanation

The DVI-I to VGA cable I ordered arrived this morning and I hooked the projector up to my media centre this afternoon to check it out.

The image looks better (sharper) compared to when I was using the s-video cable but I will need to wait till its dark tonight to get the best effect and draw a true comparison.

I am pleased with the EMP-TW10H for the money I paid for it. I was going to buy a projector back in 1999 but ended up buying a Toshiba 32WD98b Dolby Digital TV.

I am new to projectors but wish I had bought one sooner. I might consider upgrading to a 3D projector in the New Year.

Glad you got it sorted out Ian, and yes once you experience a projecor in your own room a tv looks rather small in comparison does'nt it Upgrading to a new 3D projector in the new year ? O that will open another can of worms for you but make sure you do plenty research before you buy as it involves more than just buying a 3D projector Ian
