Hi,

Great to see a dedicated forum.

I am considering a projector but was steering more towards the Domino 30 model as it is High Definition (according to the specs).

But what is HDMI?

Is it an add on? Can you buy it after you buy the projector? I see no mention on the sim2 website.

I'm also looking at this pj but my room is only 14ft long & i have a 6ft screen.
With that i wont be able to have this pj can you get a short throw version of the Dom20?

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface.

Basically, HDMI offers a higher quality connection between DVD player and projector.
At the moment only Pioneer and Meridian have HDMI outputs on their players but I am sure this will become an industry standard.

The picture quality using HDMI is substantially better than component.
You cannot add HDMI afterwards as it would mean major changes to the projector which would not be economically viable.
The Domino 20 and 20H will handle High Def signals very well but the 30 and 300 series are better with HD.
I have HD sources here in the form of Euro 1080 and JVC
D-Theater for comparison.

There is no short throw version of the Domino 20.
The throw ratio is from 2.2 to 3.1 to 1.
That means the widest image you can achieve in a 14ft room is 70" wide allowing for the depth of the projector so you won't quite fill your screen

Can i ask one more thing then? do you know of any other DLP that is as good as the Dom20 that does have a short throw?

Who puts in the HDMI socket? Is it done by SIM themselves offering a different Domino projector with this mod?

Introducing HDMI into our projectors is not as straight forward as you may think, there are many factors involved in particular ensuring that the HDMI interface meets with strict compliance standards.

as previously mentioned we are currently reviewing an upgrade path for existing 300 and domino owners, as soon as we have more information we will post it here.

Not quite, but almost as good as the 20 (IMHO), you could try the NEC HT1000 or newer HT1100. Both are 4:3 1024 x 768 projectors that can be 'forced' into pure 16:9 mode, so they will behave just like a dedicated 16:9 pj ALA the Domino 20.

From approx 11ft away, you can project up to a 7ft wide image. The only drawback of the above two NECs is the very faint light spill above/below the 16:9 image where the unused portion of the DMD array is still projecting a minimal amount of light. I only barely notice it during very very dark scenes if I look for it.

The NEC does get good reviews, and is short throw, so is worth a look IMHO.

That's good news. If an upgrade to HDMI is up for review, I may get the projector without for now as I will have no benefit from it at the moment and possibly upgrade (if the option becomes available) at a later date.

Does the Domino 30 have a shorter throw distance ? what size screen could i fill from 3.7 metres ?

Sanjuro,

The Domino 30 throw ratio is 1.8 to 2.4 so you screen size will be 2 metres wide, about 6.5 feet wide which is ideal for you size room.

Do SIM2 have any plans to introduce a slightly shorter throw lens option on any of their (sub £12k) range of projectors.

I am in the market for something at the £8-10k price range but none of your current range will fill my screen in my Home Cinema Room - cosequentley I am loooking at other makes but would prefer a SIM2 if this option was available (and No I can't/won't fit a smaller screen/move house/put the projector in the garden!)

Very useful thread - I've just bought a Domino 20 (waiting delivery) and yes: -

1. I would be interested in any HDMI upgrade that might be available in the future - I too have no need just yet

2. Could someone please tell me how exactly you calculate the Screen width from the Throw Ratio please.

I have a Room (rear wall to a fixed 7ft screen - 17ft 1") so lens to screen will be about 15' 6", allowing for the depth of the pj and space round the back of it for cabling. Been told I'm ok and will be able to fill and not overlap the 7ft screen - am I?

Welcome to the SIM2 club you have plenty of throw for the Domino 20 to easily fill you screen.

The HDMI upgrade is available, we are just finalising the cost, regretfully it will be more than the £500 extra between the standard Domino 20 and the 20H.

At this moment in time the throw ratio of Sim2 projectors is

HD2 and HD2+ = 1.8 to 2.4
ED2 (matterhorn) 2.3 to 3.1

There are no plans to change these ratio's in the current range.

The lenses are the same on all of our models, the reason why the Domino 20 has an even longer throw is because the DLP panel is physically smaller.

SIM2 is very aware of comments made about throw distances, good or bad, and take them very seriously.

My Screen is 96" (visible area) wide so I need to multiply that by 1.8 = 173" - my room is exactly 183" long in the area where the projector will mount.

I'm guessing that the HD2+ machines are more than 10" deep from back to front of lense?

It seems I'm only inches away from having a SIM2 !!

The absolute minimum distance of the front of the lens is 11" from the rear wall. This would involve using a right angle IEC socket and right angle phono plugs.

In reality I don't have enough room anyway as I also need to allow for the curtains and curtain rail above the French Windows.

Unfortunatley the SIM2 is out for me.
