Just bought a AE500 - advice needed please

I'm currently using a progressive DVD player with the AE500 using component cables - but I don't think this is giving me access to the higher quality resolutions that the projector can produce.

Other than a HTPC - what else could I do to access the higher/better resolutions?

Also - does anybody have any guidelines as to calibration of the projector - settings etc..
