I'm very happy with my Sony VW12 and 80" screen except that I'm noticing excessive edge enhancement on almost every DVD! Didn't notice it as much before when I had a RPTV. It's a bit annoying and I'm wondering whether anybody else is bothered by it. I've tried turning the sharpness down but that doesn't really help much.

Yes, I've noticed it, and it's infuriating, and sometimes ruins a movie. Didn't bother me on a bog-standard CRT either, on a projector it's madening.

I've noticed it too, but fortunately it's not too bad on most DVds I've watched recently. The worst DVD is the R1 of SW TPM - I though there was something wrong with my set-up somewhere..

Gladiator has a small amount, but fortunately not as much as TPM, so I don't notice it that much.

IIRC, some pjs or DVD players actualy add to this effect - one of the DVI players did this, so didn't help much!

I agree wholeheartedly. It is hugely refreshing and enjoyable when you put in a disc that is free of it. And equally disappointing when you find one that has too much.

Reducing sharpness on the PJ won't remove it, if it is on the disc. You should keep your sharpness control at around 50. At this level, the PJ isn't doing anything to the signal. Less, and it is softening it; more and it's adding EE of it's own.

For a good example of a film with little or no EE - look at Star Wars Ep 2 AOTC. (Mine is R1). If you are still seeing intrusive EE on this title, then 'something else' is causing it.

I agree too Godfather. In my limited experience with a pj (2 months), it seems to be UK discs (ie R2 PAL) which seem to be over-enhanced - none of the discs I have yet played from the USA have the problem, though time may prove me wrong. Big recent offender - Anchor Bay's R2 Blood on Satan's Claw.

You're right Nigel, AOTC is almost completely free of EE. X2 was very good too IIRC. Watched Open Range last night and there was a fair amount of EE which spoiled an otherwise beautiful transfer.

Glad I read this post guys! I've had my VW12HT for about a month now and thought it was the projector at fault. Will be looking out my copy of X-Men 2 to see how a film should look with little or no edge enhancement! :-)

I forgot to mention one of the worst recent offenders of excessive EE has to be Gangs of New York R1 (don't know about R2). There's a halo around everything it's like a bad analogue TV signal!

Whats the difference between 'edge enhancement' and 'ghosting'?

EE is applied digitally and ON PURPOSE during the DVD mastering process

Ghosting is a result of bad cables/dodgy electronics etc..

Apparently it's to make the edges of things look sharper on small tv sets.

I must admit to wondering what all the fuss was about over edge enhancement. I've never really noticed it before on our Sony KV32FX60...and then I watched Pirates of the Carribean
Great film, great picture otherwise, but OMG edge enhancement all over the place!

Since we're likely to be joining the projector fraternity soon, at least I know what I've go to look forward to

Does anyone know if Superbit releases are free from this annoying EE at all? Was gonna order a couple of titles from HMV to see how much better the picture can be.

It's again hit and miss. Some of the superbit transfers look identical to the standard releases.

If you ar enjoying the movie you tend not to notice it. Trouble is, once you do...

It's most prominent when people stand against solid coloured backgrounds. The effect does vary wildy from DVD to DVD.

I see it on R1 as often as I do R2. I only have R1 disc as until recently I had access to US facilities.

My advice for PJ owners is don't bother with R1 discs. They either have reformatted image sizes or lower picture quality.

Just noticed it when I played my R1 copy of finding nemo on my sister's 28" TV, the only difference being no RGB, yet we own virtually identical TV's!

Edge Enhancement is the curse of DVD!!
Someone should start a petition/campaign (worldwide) to get companies (and the ignorant people that have control over transfers) to leave their fingers from it, especially as more and more viewers are using big displays and projectors.

Usually lesser known releases and some cheaper back catalogue titles offer better PQ than so called blockbusters as the latter are treated with all sorts of things incl. EE whereas the cheap titles are not. Go figure.

I thought Shrek had appauling EE, lots of halos around heads. I just put my projector much closer to the screen to get a nice 32" picture and now I barely notice it ;-)

As I am about to buy my first projector, is edge enhancement something that continually distracts from a movie. This could be decisive in my buying a projector...

Not always no, otherwise no-one would buy a projector.

Some are worse than others, and some disks don't contain any at all.

Edge 'enhancement' is definitely not enough to put me off buying a projector, but it'll make me think twice about getting a bigger screen.
