Cine 7 and still happy, but.......

Hi Guys,

Not been on here in a long while and not really been keeping up to date with the projector world. I am still using a Barco Cine 7 with a Blue Ray player hooked up and enjoying 1080i pics.

What I'm looking for is an idea of what price/model of new projector ie lcd/dlp/3 chip dlp etc that will blow my Cine 7 away. I have no idea at what cost I'll need to spend to do this and how far the "new" technology has come.

Last time I went down this road a few years ago my Cine 7 was still giving them a run for it's money.

A Barco 1209s would be a very nice upgrade !

As far as I'm concerned CRT is still the best projection technology....

I'd love to get a larger CRT but space restrictions mean I can't, hence looking for a digital upgrade.

To get "similar" quality to your Cine 7 is going to be difficult and would cost £3-5000. I would run the C7 into the ground, wait for it to fail. Then look at replacing.

I have a friend in a similar situation he was about to buy a digital because it was the buzz.

In the end he spent a couple of hundred getting it calibrated.
Another couple of hundred on Blue ray disks.
He's taking the whole family to Lapland and still thinks he will have saved money.

Re: Cine 7 and still happy, but.......

Wow, suprises me people are still recommending CRT, I would of thought all these years later digital would be way infront, is a digital projector for 5k really only as good as a Cine 7?

What on earth would you need to spend to get a 1209 equiv then ?

How much does a 1209 go for today in top condition?

Re: Cine 7 and still happy, but.......

Try posting in the digital section see what they say about CRT.

Unless there is something wrong with your projector you will only gain brightness.

A really good BG1209s should go for about £3k. Plus you need a scaller if you want to carry on with DVD etc.

I'm guessing that a 1209 could not be mounted to produce a 8ft picture any closer than a Cine 7?

I just saw a very low hour 1209s sell in in the us for $ 356. Broke my heart to pass this one up but I already have two with new CRT's. Shipping would have been about another $500 in the USA.....

You guess correctly. The distance will be pretty much the same but a 1209 is longer

What are you using to project to 1080i? Fury II? HTPC? I've got a Runco 940 which is basically the same as your Cine 7 but am having a difficult time getting 1080i with my HTPC.
Thanks,
Scott McDonald

I thought the runco only had the 4 RGBS bnc inputs. If that is the case you will have to combine the H&V sync signals

Yeah I use the Fury, HDMI to 5bnc basically, seems to work well.

Was going to update my HTPC with a Blue Ray player but when I found this thought I'd give it a go.

Seems to do a good job although I found it clipped below Video Black, bit of tweaking on my player got it back.

My runco 940 has 5 gold BNC's on the back. I use RGB as my selected input although it does allow me to use option 4 or 5 which are V Sync, etc. I've tried using powerstrip choosing 1920 x 1080i at 30mhz...my projector has a tough time getting this to sync. Is that what the FURY II does? I just picked up a blue ray dvd player for $50 US and would like to see the difference between my standard 1280 x 720.
Thanks,
Scott

that doesn't sound right, 30Hz is way too low and 30 Mhz is radio frequncy. You want to be at 60hz for 1080i.

The Fury takes an HDMI signal and converts it to RGB (D to A), what ever you set your DVD player to output the Fury will do, 576i, 720p, 1080i etc etc.

Powerstrip is a Pc tool, you wouldn't use the Fury with a pc? unless maybe a graphics card that output via a HDMI connection. But if your using a pc why not use the VGA out or a DVI to VGA convertor, it's a lot cheaper.
