Barcovision 508 CRT projector wont start

Help required with Barcovision 508(BV508)

I bought this projector from another AVforums member (off ebay) some 4 months ago and it has worked flawlessly during this time.
Yesterday when I switched it on it refuses to fire up the tubes. When I press the standby/power on button it makes a series of repetitive pulsing sounds and a number of LEDs on what I presume is the power supply board(I have no electronics training at all so I am guessing on this) flash on and off in sync with this pulsing sound. Also the standby/power LED on the back of the machine never goes green as it used to – it stays red.

I should mention that I do not have a fixed set up and have to move it into position each time I want to use it. The last time I used it, it was working fine but then of course after having watched a film I had to lift it out of the way into the corner of the room. I am wondering whether when I did this something has shifted inside.

I have done some reading online about these CRT projectors and have enjoyed this BV508 even though it is video only and hence not considered that desirable. I would love to get it up and running again. Although as I only paid GBP 59 for it I really need a cheap fix or I will have to write it off and look for something else

Video of the problem can be found at: MVI_1566 - eSnips, share anything
Any advice much appreciated.

Re: Barcovision 508 CRT projector wont start

Hi Mate
The 508 was not very well understood by the normal Barco Guys. It was a really made by a company in India that Barco bought to bring down their production costs for CRT assembly in the later years.
It was designed and given the Barco badge to go up against the Selecos in the Pub and club market. Having no fans meant it would be less prone to smoke chocking the electronics.

Sadly because it was not a "normal" barco design it did not follow or share the same board layouts to the other barcos. For example the convergence boards and EHT designs are virtually identical across all the barco range. The 508 and its sister the Cine 6 were completely different.

I have only worked on one 508 and that was to pronounce it dead. I doubt you will find much support I'm afraid as it was a horid projector to work on too. Any repair is going to cost you more than your original out lay.

It is difficult to tell from your video or pictures what those leds relate to but I suspect the two red ones will be scan fail and EHT hold down. The sort of start-up oscillation would typically indicate something like a power supply failure (ie one of the voltage rails has gone down). On other types or Barco I would be looking at the convergence board too but this may not relate to your machine.

If it is any consolation I don't think this is any thing you did but constantly moving it. but it is far from easy to get any CRT projector back in the same spot each time.

I will leave it for others to suggest you scour the classifieds on this forum for a digital device that might fit your installation better. I'm sorry I can't help

Roland is correct. The 508 is a strange beast.... Do you see any Red LED's lit up ?

No red lights just flashing green ones and a pulsing sound.
Looks like I may have to give up on this one.

That link you sent me was v interesting.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Barcovision 508 CRT projector wont start

i had the same problem with my barco data.i used to hit the main transformer a tap with the screw driver and it would fire up.so i got my mate to re solder the bad connections and clean up the board and now the projector fires up perfectly.
now i have a new problem i cant get the projector to go into installation mode or if it does i cant see anything and it makes a squeeling noise and a red warning led comes on for scan fail
hope this helps you out
and someone can sort my problem for me

Re: Barcovision 508 CRT projector wont start

I totally concur with Roland,

When I worked for Henry (crt) we used to swear badly about the 508, and as Roland said, when they went wrong, there was very little you could do about it, and never any 'breakers' for spares, they were most un-Barco like and a total PITA.

Having said that, everything 'is' fixable of course, but I certainly have no spares for one, and am guessing Roland doesn't either? they were actually capable of a very decent picture...liquid coupled no less! how many people realised that? normally the reserve of the 9" models.

If it were 701/708/808 etc no problem.

Wasn't there a 508 for parts on eBay a few day's ago?

Hi Mate you probably should have started this as a new thread unless this is a 508.

Installation mode is only really suitable for brand new machines ,because once a so called expert (me included) has had their hands inside the projector then the factory setting will be different and so a lot of functions like raster centring will not work correctly.

Does your projector work at all? or is it just when you enter the adjustment menus. It could be that you have the H size too big but that would tend to cause EHT hold down rather than Scan fail. It would help to know which projector this is too.

Ryan
Thanks for your email but If we keep discussions in the forums every one can benifit and others may well have an imediate answer for you.
I suggest you start a new thread as the projector you have is a Barco Data 500 (the 7" version of the Barco Data 800) and would take this topic in the wrong direction.

What do you consider the main transformer ? Can you tell us your exact projector type ?

Scan fail is usually a problem with the horizontal or vertical scan section.
