720p DLP screen door vs. 1080p LCD screen door...

Hi,

Does anyone know to what degree the screendoor effect would be reduced if you switched a 720p DLP for a 1080p LCD. Obviously if you sit further away you would see none with either, but that is not the point.

1080p res. has roughly twice as many pixels as 720p, so does that mean that (forgetting pixel spacing differences) you could theoretically sit half as far from the screen with a 1080p PJ without suffering more from the screen door effect? I'm sure it isn't that simple, heh.

Anyway, the reason for this is that currently I can just about see screendoor (depending on colors on screen - the lighter the worse I assume) with my 720p PJ at X metres, and I can't or don't want to sit further back. So, I was thinking it might be worth moving to a 1080p LCD model to a) elminiate this and b) gain some monster lens shift capability which would be much appreciated.

Any thoughts are welcome. Cheers,

H

I can pretty much put my face against the screen and not see any screendoor effect on my infocus 7205 DLP 720p projector. What DLP are you currently using?

Re: 720p DLP screen door vs. 1080p LCD screen door...

Really, mate? I find it hard to believe that you cannot see the pixel outlines/spacing if you are right next to it.

I am currently sitting about 2.5m from a 96" screen, using the 720p DLP GT7000 PJ.

I know people will tell me that 1 x screen diagonal is too little, but to me the screen doesn't feel too large. However, at this distance I can just see the pixel outlines on light colours. It has the effect of making blocks of colour look a bit dirty. I.e. the yellow screen at the beginning of Watchmen doesn't look like a block of yellow, it looks like a block of yellow with black hatching on top.

It doesn't exactly wreck the image, but I still have the option of returning the 720p DLP, and getting a 1080p LCD (z700, I think), for twice the price of course!

So, I'm just thinking for an extra 500 hundred I would get better blacks (I presume, although white walls will limit the visibility of this improvement), large lens shift (handy), 8 decibels less noise (isn't this equal to halving the percevied volume?) and 1080p support. If this 1080p feature would reduce the screendoor effect from 2.5m then the extra £500 is obviously less of a waste.

I might buy the 1080 and return if it's no better, but I don't like having a grand in limbo, with the possibility existing that the return is rejected (this goes for both PJs, mind).

Cheers,

H

Nope, i can't see any gaps between the pixels even right up close to the picture. The only time i had that problem was with old LCD projectors. I wonder if it is your projector.

Re: 720p DLP screen door vs. 1080p LCD screen door...

I guess it might come down to price point.

My 7205 cost around £2.5k compared to around £440 (from google search, i know nothign about the projector to be honest) on the GT7000. The GT7000 is also a fairly bright projector.

I have a JVC HD 350 arriving tomorrow, i will see if that shows any of the signs of screen door effect that old LCD's had.

You shouldn't be seeing screendoor with a DLP projector, in fact you shouldn't even really see the pixel structure if sat at the right distance.
