Part of me is thinking 'This is just another Sony ploy and another excuse for a propietry technology on the market', and part of me is thinking 'Maybe this ploy actually works...'.

Either way, it looks highly promising...

Not sure if my budget stretches to £13,000 though .

I was going to hang on for this model, but decided to get the Marantz VP12 S3 instead.
The £13,000 price quoted is the japanese price.
Also unless something has changed, it doesn't include a lens!
Add another £3-4 for that

With import duty and VAT, it could be around £20,000 if it ever reaches these shores at all.

But you never know with Sony, they could shock us all and release it here for £13-14,000 "all in".

What is exciting, is the possibility of a cheaper, slightly lower spec machine hitting the market sometime next year.

Should be fun watching the two big hitters battling it out over the next year or so.

Three chip high resolution DLP (1920x1080)
Three chip high resolution SXRD (1920x1080)

I will pick the winner in a couple of years!

Yes, I read your thread about the Marantz, fun reading, and it appears to be rather impressive .

My highest point of 'Reference' in the projector world is Sim2's HT300 Plus, it'd be interesting to see how projectors like this Sony, your Marantz and the 'up and coming' technologies compared .

I wonder how Sony have overcome the problems of using a Xenon arc lamp? Excessive heat generation and short lamp life.

I wouldn;t be in a rush to buy it unless you have a huge screen. The demo at CEDIA was a con job and no-one I know saw any DVD on it. Only studio master D5 digital high average picture level HD material.....I wonder why....

All manufacturers want to show their products off to the best of their potential don't they?

All retailers don't, but that's a different matter

I saw the Qualia 004 at the Sony building in Ginza, Tokyo a couple of weeks ago, it's very nice! Even my friend thought it was impressive, and he can't see the point in anything better than a 21" TV...

They had a HD demo from their BluRay player including the Bad Boys 2 trailer and various quiet scenes like elegent women walking about, and scenes of the Swiss alps. Can't remember offhand what the price was, and the language barrier meant it was hard to get any other info from the guy doing the demo. The demo was on a large approx 10ft wide 16:9 screen in a dedicated demo room with the seats about 1-1.5 screen widths back. The projector was on the ceiling, right behind the seats and was quiet - I can't recall hearing it even though the demo itself was fairly quiet.

The other stuff in the Qualia range included a CD player and amp, speakers, a tiny 5mp digital camera and a 36" HD CRT. I'll have to dig out some pictures later. They were selling special bound and boxed brochures for the Qualia kit, they varied in price but were in the 1500-2500yen range (£8-14!). I just took the free ones...

Dimmy: It has potential. I do think it is the most beautiful piece of engineering I've seen. It's just I don't think a blue haze qualifies as good black level. No doubt a more up to date version will be at CES next month and I am looking forward to seeing it again.

This is something I'm keeping my eye on...

Remember that SXRD is another form of LCOS , and JVC already have a D-ILA device that has a native res of 4,000 x 2,000 (yeah ok, it's £1.8m....)

So may I add 1920 x 1080 D-ILa to your list there Fulabeer...

Your right!
Pro JVC were demo-ing their latest LCOS a few months ago, and i believe it was on par with the SXRD.

It's the contrast, or ultimate black level that LCOS/SXRD need to improve upon to see off the threat from 3 chip DLP.

The only backward step i can see with 1 v 3 chippers is panel alignment, and colour uniformity across the screen.

Although LCOS is sweet(black levels aside), it does suffer similar problems to 3 chip LCD PJs.

I think we all need to keep our eyes peeled for what Immersive will come out with next.
The virtuoso was a stunning first effort, and will be interesting how the next gneration model will perform.
I should imagine i may be feeling a little green with envy when it comes out!
HD2+?
SDI direct?
New type of colour wheel?
God knows with these guys!
You just jnow it WILL be something special!

Imagine what they will do once they get their hands on a three chipper!
