Exclusive! Official JVC HD550, HD950 and HD990 Thread. News/reviews/owners

JVC have unveiled their new projector line up to the UK press with exclusive video coverage of the new models on AVForums.tv

The new models consist of the entry level DLA-HD550, the DLA-HD950 and a high-end custom installation model the HD990. The existing JVC models (DLA-HD350 and DLA-HD750) will continue to be available until stock runs out. So what do the new models offer?

Starting with the DLA-HD990 information was scarce on the exact features available but the contrast ratio will be 70,000:1 native, without a dynamic iris.

The DLA-HD950 is a direct replacement for the HD750 and boasts a contrast ratio of 50,000:1 native and is THX and ISF certified.

The DLA-HD550 replaces the HD350 with a native contrast of 30,000:1.

For the first time JVC are implementing Clear Motion Drive technology into its projectors. This is a new addition that introduces frame interpolation for fast moving sports and games as well as DVD and broadcast TV. However JVC are keen to stress that for Blu-ray movie playback there will be no need for the CMD as BD runs at 24fps and the company see no need to change the intention of the movie makers. Also added is inverse telecine to display TV broadcast and DVD created using 3:2 pull down and reconverts this source back to 24fps and displays this at double speed (48fps) ensuring cinema like viewing.

Further technology added includes the screen adjustment mode which attempts to match the projectors images to the type of screen being used, such a grey or white screen.

Both projectors will incorporate the HQV Reon-VX video processor developed by silicon optix, which features precision I/P conversion and scaling with full 10bit 4:4:4 signal processing.

The DLA-HD950 has been licensed with the ISFccc (certified calibration controls) mode, enabling trained and certified ISF users to professionally calibrate the projector to the source chain, room environment and industry standards for video reproduction. This allows not only the best performance from the DLA-HD950 but images that recreate exactly what was seen when films and TV material was mastered for video playback. Again the DLA-HD950, like its predecessor will feature the THX mode and certification. This picture preset attempts to hit industry standards for film and TV playback out of the box without advanced calibration. While it will never be a substitute to professional set up, the preset does give users an ‘as close as possible’ image to Rec.709 and D65 standards.

Both projectors also have fixed lens apertures which can be adjusted to suit the viewing environment of each model. The DLA-HD550 has a three point adjustment with the DLA-HD950 sporting 16 steps.

For further details you can view a full video preview of the projectors launch at AVForums.tv video

Finally, in October JVC will launch its high-end projector, the DLA-HD990. Information on this model is scarce and we will update this story as soon as we have the full details.

The DLA-HD550 and DLA-HD950 are available in late September.

Are there any dealers out there with the JVC in stock so people can go along and have a look?

Re: Exclusive! Official JVC HD550, HD950 and HD990 Thread. News/reviews/owners

Last year at IFA and CEDIA JVC announced the HD350/750 with a contrast ratio of 15k:1/30k:1. A few weeks later they upped the specs to 30k:1/50k:1. Now I'm wondering: Do you guys think there's a chance history will repeat itself this year? Maybe JVC is trying to lure the competition into false safety by saving the final specs for later?

I'm just wondering, because if frame interpolation is really the only thing that has changed from 750 to 950, I'd find that rather sad...

Morning

We will be holding our JVC launch event on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th September. We will have the HD550 and are trying hard to see if we can get our hands on the HD950 as well.

Again, any forum members are more than welcome to come down to Tunbridge Wells and have a look. With admins OK we will set up a thread in the events section today so members can register to give us an idea of numbers.

We have just seen two 950's at IFA being used for 3D, it was interesting stuff and we will feature it in a future show video.

Thanks for the info Alastair and glad to see you are holding a launch event. I am interested to visit your showroom. I guess I won't miss anything if I go on Sat as Friday will be tough to manage.

Do you have any info on
1. Price of HD550
2. Any changes made to colour management to tame the colours considering the HD550 an upgrade to the HD350?

Cheers

Ani

I'm sure there'll be a couple of little changes to make an improvement over the 350 - I doubt they'd replace an already competitive model with one that looks virtually the same. We'll see as soon as they become available

Re: Exclusive! Official JVC HD550, HD950 and HD990 Thread. News/reviews/owners

So at the moment the 550 and 950 appear to be more of a tweak to the current models as opposed to a complete overhaul then and it just seems the frame interpolation is only for non BD material? so more of a 351 and 751?

It would be interesting to see what the screen sensor thing does, i wonder if this just up's the lumens for a darker screen

The 990 is the most interesting of the bunch

i am a little disappointed with these PJ they are the same as the 350/750 just with minor upgrades
Il wait for the HD990, hopefully that will be a big step up on picture quality

£10k ish is being reported for the HD990

Also i dont see the point in not letting the customer choose if he wants to turn on FI with 1080p24.
Seems odd given the many reports of people seeing motion smear/blurr with blu ray.

really hoping there is more to the HD950 at this point otherwise its meh (over the previous model)

If people are reporting motion blur with Blu-Ray might this not be an artefact of the film (meant to be there?) and therefore no amount of FI would be able to get rid of this, or is it D-ILA specific? Also, as suggested previously might the CR numbers not go up on launch as with the previous generation?

I am keen to see what the street prices of these new machines are. AFAIK the HD350 RRP on release was £4499 and the new HD550 seems to be slightly less at €4999 (whatever that turns out to be in sterling). I am actually more interested in what this will do to the prices of remaining stock of (white please) HD350's... Any chance of them hitting £2k?

D-ILA specific for some of us.

AFAIK the rrp for the HD350 was £3,500 at launch (with a pre order price of £3,000 at PJ Hifi's launch), which is why I stuck with an order I had for the then new AE3000 at £2,200 (it cost me more than the difference in the end with buying and selling secondhand ).

I don't want to know how cheap any remaining HD350 go for (so I'd like any of the pop up adds for any deals to be removed ).

I'm interested to see what the HD990 brings, but more academically as I would probably wait until they are replaced before I'd consider an upgrade (might have improved my room enough to see the difference from my HD350 by then too).

I think that £3500 was their general street price, but if you go to the JVC UK site and try and buy one through their eShop, the HD350 is still listed at £4499

Reading again, I'm not sure you can't turn on FI, it just says "However JVC are keen to stress that for Blu-ray movie playback there will be no need for the CMD as BD runs at 24fps and the company see no need to change the intention of the movie makers."

I think 'there will be no need' is a little ambiguous as to whether you won't be able to use it.

FI can be used with 1080/24. It's up to the user, but I agree with JVCs stance that FI can be overused when 24p is perfectly fine (sample and hold effect acknowledged for some users)

Out of interst can you set how agressive the FI can be like you can with other projectors with FI?

There are two levels, imaginatively named Low and High.

Any details on HD 990?

Hi Phil - when do you anticipate spending some time with the HD 990? Information remains very scarce and we are all very anxious to hear all the juicy details! :D

In particular I am interested in hearing about the lens (higher end?) and sharpness, improvements in convergence/manufacturing alignment, improvements to ANSI CR, lumens, and of course how it looks - particularly as compared to the Sony VW85. Thanks and please keep use posted!

Phil, this is good.

If my mem'ry serves me well, one of the very few caveats in your review of the 750 was that some people found sample and hold a problem. They now appear to have a 'solution', whilst leaving the option for having it turned off for those who don't find it a problem.

A good move by JVC, I think.

Now, when are you going to tell them to catch up with Panasonic and use memory zoom & focus.

Details of our 950 customer Preview will be available shortly.
It's going to be interesting to see how the CMD alters the proformance of the projector.

So, in short: Slightly sharper, appears to have increased ANSI contrast (though it was not measured) and the FI mode seems to work well. No real increases in ON/OFF CR (non expected though) and the HD990 is essentially a 'hand picked' HD950 (a bit like a 'blue printed' engine) to get the best out of each part so it will have a higher CR of 70,000:1.

The rrps in USA are:

RS15 $5495 shipping mid September.
RS25 $7995 shipping 3rd week in September.
RS35 $9995 shipping 'later this year'.

I think I can sit back an enjoy my HD350 quite while longer, as there is nothing that the new models bring that I would benefit from in a less than perfect room TBH.

I'm a little disappointed the brightness levels rumored previously turned out to be false. A 1200 lumen HD550 would have been a no brainer for me. Otherwise these look like very decent machines, if more of a sidegrade than an upgrade. Hopefully the increased ansi and sharpness suggested at avs will give a noticeable improvement.

Even though it's not recommended, it'll be interesting in seeing how FI affects 24p. My main issue with the HD1 - other than wanting more lumens and contrast - is how it handles slow panning.

Does anyone know if I import a RS35, will the warranty be honored in Europe?

You would have to ship it back to the seller at your cost if there is something that needs repaired as the warranty will only be valid in the USA Saying that these projectors from JVC are very reliable but it's still a gamble so if you really want to import one i'd recommend seeing if the seller would give you an extended warranty and also do your research
