Barco Cine 6 or 801s w/ iScan Ultra?

I am planning to set up my first home theatre with a used Barco CRT projector. I am a great fan of Barco CRT monitors series, especially the Pro Calibrator Line. Fantastic hardware.

My question is simple: which one would you recommend buying used? All things considered equal, one has 4000 hours and the other 6000.

Thank you very much for your kind assistance.

Frederic.

Neither - I'm sure you can find something better for not a lot of money - what's your budget?

I agree with BM. Unless you have a very limited budget then there are much better choices of both projector and scaler.

Just a word of caution. There's a lot of s/h CRT projectors that are now passing through the hands of their 3rd / 4th or even their 5th+ owners. The chances of getting something that is unmolested are getting smaller and smaller. There's always a risk that a past enthusiastic owner has tried to 'improve' the projector, or simply had a twiddle with stuff that should have been left untouched.

I've been to plenty of machines bought privately that have been royally messed up before being sold to their new owner. It's never nice to give someone the news that they bought a sick CRT. What's worse is seeing a tight budget get blown out of the water in an attempt to resuscitate a poorly projector.

It's worth having a chat with a professional CRT supplier. These are people who work with and fix CRTs on a daily basis. The stuff they'll sell you will be working as it should. You might also be surprised by some of the deals they can do. In the long run it could save you a load of money and a lot of grief.

For what you want I'd start by having a chat with Roland at B4Projection. You'll find him in this forum, just look through the recent threads.

I would not buy anything older than an unmodified BG 808 or BD 808 with MEC tubes. But that is just my opinion. A 1209s with low hours and great tubes would be my #1 choice if you can find one at a good price. Avoid ANY projector modified by SEOS ! Again JMO.....

Re: Barco Cine 6 or 801s w/ iScan Ultra?

Thank you for your useful comments. It is a pleasure, really. Now regarding the Barco Cine 6 it is sold as first-hand at around $400 (including ceiling mount). The Barco 801S with iScan Ultra is auctioned at $100 in Paris. The seller of the first Barco provided me with close-up pictures of the tubes. No information was provided by the second seller. Both are selling on eBay.

The issue of the budget is as always determining. Frankly I am building a photographic laboratory at this time, so I cannot afford more than $500. I know it sounds pathetic, and it is certainly. Creative writing is not paying much lately. I should try writing about banks.

There is also another person with a Sony 1270QM with little hours. But this person is trying to sell at $450. I am not a great fan of Sony, because the Sony F500R I had was much less reliable than the Barco monitors.

Pardon me, perhaps this will bring a smile to your face, but I have the feeling of deja-vu with this forum. I recall my coming back to Apple Power Macintosh after 15 years on PC. Oh, there was a lot to learn about Apple lore. And frankly a lot of work to build good Macs from used parts.

So my feeling is that with CRT projectors there is a long road ahead. But I like that challenge. Of course as always with the French great expectations, little money!

Thank you for your kind help.

Frederic.

Re: Barco Cine 6 or 801s w/ iScan Ultra?

I received a private message from Rolland, and that is great! I am looking forward to talking with him about CRT projectors.

Tom, I am building a film lab as my father left me two Leica. It is almost finished now. I will begin shortly with developing black and white film.

Nice cameras ! I use to own a Leica M3 but mainly shoot 4X5 and 8X10 inch film. I really love working in the darkroom though. Mainly I use nitrogen burst tanks due to the film size but a GREAT hobby !
