VPH-1031QM brightness problem

Hey All,
Sorry, im new to this. I have a Vph-1031qm, picked it up on ebay for $170. contrast good color good, pulled off the focus assembly and pix tubes perfect, no burning or wear at all. only prob the pix is a bit dull and brightness knob dont work. tried sub bright, but still nothing. can anyone help? dont want to pay more fore repair than what I paid for the unit. LOL....
