Is anyone's projector being affected by the extremely hot weather?

My Sanyo Z4 suddenly went dead tonight, after having been on barely thirty minutes. I can't check until tomorrow, but I'm hoping it's just the thermal cutout clicking in (or out?) as has been discussed here before now, when I and others were convinced that the bulb had blown.

Or of course it could actually be the bulb...

I just wondered: has anyone else had specific overheating problems in the current heatwave?

Mine was OK last night - from about 8.45 pm. It's not a Sanyo though, and it doesn't stand in a place where it could get hot.

Morning

It could be heat related especially if the projector is ceiling mounted as this is going to to the warmest part of the room. Certainly we've had cases where amps in cabinets have triggered the thermal cutout and I guess some rooms at the moment are going to get very warm especially those with limited ventilation. I guess you will establish whether it is the thermal cut out by moving it to a cooler or better ventilated area and leaving it on for a while but as you say it may be the lamp. Fingers crossed its the thermal cut out and you don't have to stump up for a new lamp.

Regards

Alastair

Re: Is anyone's projector being affected by the extremely hot weather?

Thanks Ken and Alastair. My Z4 is well-ventilated all round, but yes, it is ceiling mounted (though right-side up, on a hung shelf) and the thermal cutout has tripped before in hot weather, so I'm hoping that's all it is this time.

To reset it you have to open the case and partially remove the main PCB. (At least, I don't think it resets itself as it cools, but I'll check before I start undoing screws). It's a bind of a procedure but as Alastair says, a lot better - and a lot cheaper - than having to replace the bulb.

Re: Is anyone's projector being affected by the extremely hot weather?

Just a thought - they have projectors in southern California where our current 'heatwave' is probably a pretty average autumn week.

I don't think they can have too much trouble with exploding lamps over there, or we'd have been sure to have heard about it.

I'd have guessed that air conditioning is pretty much standard over there though.

My cinema room has been like a sauna recently so I'm off out to buy a basic air conditioning unit this weekend, don't want to burn the polarisers out on my AX100.

Re: Is anyone's projector being affected by the extremely hot weather?

I haven't put mine on since last Friday. My room is already very hot, I don't need the PJ adding more heat into the room. It is a bit cooler today but will wait until next week until I will put it on again.

Some PJ's have a high altitude setting. This will make the fan turn faster and hopefully run a bit cooler but make more noise.

What temperatute is it when the Sanyo cut out? I've a Z4 and never experienced a cut out before.

"Before"? So has yours cut out recently too? I couldn't tell you what the temperature has to be to trip it, I'm afraid, but it's certainly happened to mine two or three times in the past. I haven't checked yet to see what the cause of the latest shut down was.

They also have much bigger rooms which also helps a lot. I went for a proper installed air con system about 5 years ago. I'm really glad I did, the cinema is now the coolest room in the house.

Re: Is anyone's projector being affected by the extremely hot weather?

Good news: this afternoon I tried the projector and it started up with no problems, bulb and all. It's cooler tonight, so I'll see how things go.

Sloany, the bulb's been on the low power setting since it was new; I'm not sure about the fan, but I think that's on low, too. If my viewing comes to a premature end tonight, I'll try adjusting it tomorrow.

Thanks to all.

Re: Is anyone's projector being affected by the extremely hot weather?

You might want to look at the reply I have posted about the hd700x. I made a fully adjustable stand quite easily that saving me doing the whole ceiling mount thing.

Optoma HD700X Fault?

Re: Is anyone's projector being affected by the extremely hot weather?

Matt, thanks for that, but I have no problems with my ceiling mount itself, or with removing the projector from it and replacing it in the correct position. When I said that resetting the cutout was a bit of a bind, I simply meant opening the case and partially removing the PCB.
