Projecting outside

Hi Guys,

I have a friend who is rather flush and is interested in projecting Glastonbury outside (early evening and night) in the grounds of his house. We're talking 200" + screen size. Can anbody recommend a suitable 1080p projector?

Also, anyone know the maximum safe length you can use a HDMI cable?

Cheers

James

Re: Projecting outside

I would think that he'd need around 3000-4000 lumens (based on needing to project in the eary evening) maybe more depending on how big he goes, which I'd think points towards a digital cinema projector if he needs 1080p. Might be able to stack some cheaper projectors to get that although I don't know enough about that to say how well it'd work. The other option is to go for a big presentation projector, but the quality isn't likely to be as good, and the resolution probably much lower.

As for the HDMI, I believe its around 15-20m is the max depending on how good the cable is...

I have tested out the panasonic PT-DW10000. Which is 10000 lumins, it has four bulbs and is a monster of a projector. This would be perfect for outside projecting, It is one amazing projector. It cost £35000! But i think you can hire them from panasonic (thats what the guy told me)

Re: Projecting outside

Cheaper option to the BIG panny is the Sanyo XF71 range with dual lamps (10k lumens) or XF47 (15k lumens) below that your on 6.5 to 7k lumens for single lamp units, the 7k lumens PLC-XP200 is £5k ish with a lens. XF71 is £10k ish + lens i think and the 47 is £13k + lens This is what i would be looking at probably with a Pro Audio sound rig something like Funktion One (UK) set up with an audio processor. What sort of budget has your firend got for this system?

Re HDMI length anything over 20m is going to need somthing other than standard you can go 100m over fibre at acost of £1000+ or 80-90m over Cat6 with good baluns (£300 a pair) If its for a one time gig best to rent/hire gear have it set up and then taken down after (a bit like the real glastonbury) but you will need a pro spec sound system to replicate the audio, just like the one linked too. Drop us a line if you want a quote for setting this up for you, sounds like fun!
