DIY projector screen from diytheatre.com impressions (56k beware)

Hi everyone

I've finished building my HT room recently (details and pics coming to construction forum soon) and wanted to share my impressions with DIY projector screen bought from diytheatre.com (USA).

First of all, it required quite some time to make it all ready. My screen is a plasterboard, with a joint in the middle (took me a while to make it as smooth as possible). I was a bit worried as screen is not perfectly flat (you can see some small bumps etc while looking at right angle) but luckily is completely invisible after applying DIY screen coat.

Plasterboard has been painted 3 times with transparent primer. Another 2 coats of white dulux and then 3 coats of DIY screen coat.

I've asked for advise about best screen for my room - light controlled, can get it completely dark (no windows). Using Benq PE7700 720p PJ, but taking into consideration the fact I'm going to upgrade in the next couple of months (as soon as my current bulb will reach it's life end). Coat has been delivered within couple of days in a plastic bottle with all instructions, paint roller etc. It is recommended to put 2 coats, 3 if necessary. I did 3 only because the quantity supplied was much more then I needed.. so why not? After painting my 102" screen I had almost half left! So if you don't have a huge screen you can always share it with someone or sell it (mind it does need to be used within a month after you open the bottle!)

First of all supprt from diytheatre.com is fantastic! I have been advised to go for White Platinum - Light Contrast screen. I've been emailing with these guys quite a few times asking for advice and have always been given quick and very accurate replay.

Ok, not for what's important. Previously I was using just a white wall. The difference is nigh and day. Contrast is so much better I could not believe my dated PE7700 can do that good job! Picture quality is superb. Words can not really give it justice, and the same go for pics but I did some anyway and must say my SLR did a good job here - pics are very close to what you see on screen. Still it looks much better in real life.

Two things to remember:
1) PJ is running in ECO mode with 2300h lamp usage - it's not as bright as it was at the beginning
2) sorry for some of the pictures not to be align correctly - I was trying to do my best

btw. I'm really curious how is it going to look when I upgrade to 1080p (half-way decided to go for Mits HC6500).

Just to give you an idea - first shot is done with flash so that you can see how does the actual screen look like.

Desktop wallpaper - found on the web, it's a "bit" enhanced with PS or sth similar, but I like it

That looks pretty awesome, nice blacks and whites. Skin tones look really good too and there is definite clarity in that space scene.

I am currently thinking about/designing a bedroom home cinema and this has motivated me to save up for sure. I want to do mine on the cheap and thought about using an Ikea Tupplar blind. But now I can see what results you've got with this I might as well do what you've done!

The only thing is with my bedroom is that its going to be a very tight fit i.e my bed will be the sofa! The other issue is trying to work out how to fit sound surround in especially when my bed is right against my wall which makes placing rear surround speakers a challenge. I also can't use a subwoofer, again due to costs and the volume implications (I'm 18 still living with my parents and doing an apprenticeship, hehe).

Anyway, i really like the quality there especially when that projector has had a lot of use already.

Can't wait to see the other pictures and details

p.s this is my first post on here about A/V and I will share my design layouts/ equipment wishlist soon from Google Sketchup

Sam

Can you keep an eye on your file sizes please, 300KB and 1000pixels max against the longest side is adequate for posting on the forums.

Thanks

resized and re-uploaded

upadate:
I've just realized the bulb has done 2800h, not 2300h mentioned above. Sorry for the confusion.
I will be ordering new PJ very soon now (most likely Sony HW10)
I've already ordered Sony HW10. Will upload some more pics when I set it all up.
