Screen Gain Measurements

I've finished my screen gain measurements and I've got them posted at my web page. You can get to it here. You can scroll through the samples listed along the bottom. Some samples had four readings taken and some only two. The two main readings were done using a halogen light source at both 250 and 1000 watts. And then some had additional readings using my pj with a 100 and a 70 IRE grayscale image. The readings were obtained using a Sekonic L758C spotmeter.

BW = Black Widow diy paint mix
Silver = S-I-L-V-E-R diy paint mix
SilverFire = Silver Fire diy paint mix
VUPEVeil = An off the shelf gray
Parkland Polywall = an old diy method
DLDaMat = Da-Lite Da-Mat
EliteCineWhite = Elite's CineWhite material
Carada BW = Carada Brilliant White
DLCinemaVis = Da-Lite Cinema Vision
DLHighPow = Da-Lite High Power
DLPearl = Da-Lite Pearlescent
VUPEWintMist =off the shelf gray paint
WilsDesWhite = Wilsonart Designer White Laminate

I intend to do more in the future as I get more samples. The link again:

Hopefully some of you may find this useful!

Re: Screen Gain Measurements

Nice post I'd be interested in an accurate Beamax reading if you can get any samples.

The Wilsonart Designer White Laminate seems like an easy alterantive for a white screen (was it you who made the S-I-L-V-E-R vs Wilsonart Designer White Laminate post on HomeTheatreShack?) - can you recommend aywhere in the UK to pick some of this up?

Re: Screen Gain Measurements

I've never contacted Beamax. But I guess I should. Do they have a US distributor?

As for Wilsonart, it is the best white DIY screen out there hands down. Try contacting them here.

I have sent Beamax an email requesting samples. Hopefully they'll join the list of companies willing to send them.

I have samples coming from Vutec, Stewart, and SI Screens in the works. Hopefully I can get them all by the beginning of April and have some figures by the end of April.

Thanks, most interesting. I was impressed by the uniformity of the Carada over 30 degrees. It is a very natural looking screen. Looking forward to seeing the Studiotek 130 from Stewart

Re: Screen Gain Measurements

Beamax has replied positively. I'll be adding them to the gain readings by the end of April. And since they're a European Company I'll add my review here as well as my main forum.

Re: Screen Gain Measurements

Stewart and SI have yet to give me the approval needed for the larger samples I need - 600mm square. It's a bit confusing to me as to why this is as they'll readily give me a standard paper sized sample. I've talked to the person responsible at Stewart for samples and he said they require an approval from a higher up. So far I haven't heard from any 'higher ups'. And I've emailed the contact I was given twice already.

It's the same situation at SI in that someone has to approve the larger sample. And I've contacted them twice as well.

Everyone else was very accommodating. They all replied positively very quickly and as far as I know I should have samples from Elite, Vutec, and Beamax shortly. I have to talk to my DNP contact today to find out about samples.

Mech, this is very useful information

The off axis measurements highlight the importance of the behavior of the screens in the real world and the actual gain.

I agree completely. Too many folks just look at the gain figure and that's it. You have to look at the whole picture. It is my intention that when I'm done I will have full color reproduction charts, gain, viewing cone, and spectrophotometer readings on everything I can get my hands on. It should turn itself into quite the screen selection database when it's done.

SI is the only company to turn down my request for a sample. In researching their Black Diamond, it appears that they have enough trouble getting things right at the moment.

Stewart finally agreed to my request and DNP did as well. I also hit up Da-Lite for the new Joe Kane screen sample, HD Progressive(?). Hopefully everything will show up soon. So far I've only received stuff from Vutec.
