Draper v Beamax Samples

Okay, so I got my Draper Matt White & HC Grey samples, and the same from Beamax.

I'm actually quite shocked at the revelation.

The Draper White had the best punchy image. The whites are white, the colours true, the brightness much better. A more vivid picture.

Beamax has eggshell finish (slightly magnolia), so colours were off, not as bright as Draper, but had better blacks. The Draper had very milky blacks (because its a whiter white)

Draper HC Grey was much better than Beamax Grey. The beamax was WAY to dark grey, killing almost all colours. The Draper Grey was much better compromise, except you can see the grain of the screen.

So, I'm still lost. Do I go for correct colours, puncy bright image, with less black with the draper. Or less vivid image with better blacks?

I have an Infocus X10.

Hi Leob,
Can you tell us the name of each sample you compare to the next please?
(ie: Draper M1300 or Matte White D (or S) vs Beamax V1/V2/V3 and Draper Hi Def Grey or Lumi Grey vs Beamax V4)
It would help a great deal.
Many thanks

Neither draper sample came with any markings as to what they are. (m1300 etc..)
Beamax white is Matt white V1.

Samples are from BEAMAX direct, and CVS for Draper.

Re: Draper v Beamax Samples

Hi,

As for whites and colours, etc. To do real testing right, you need a calibrated projector + the correct environment + the right test set up / conditions.

However, this goes beyond what you and many others want: the right screen for you and your set up / room.

Now, how do you go about this?

Simple.

Forget about asking anybody else. Just look at the images on the different fabrics and go for the one YOU like most.

I am not saying all this stuff is completely irrelevant, but at the end of the day, you're the one watching. So go for what you like - that's it.

There's only one other route, and that's to go with an expert installer and leave it all to him. Trust his experience / know how / equipment to get it right for you.

Thanks Otto.
I know, you are right, only I can judge. I was only asking in the hope that someone would have some insight like 'don't go with this because...'
Also, sometimes you won't see the flaws in a piece of fabric the size of an A4 paper, until you go fullsize, by which time its too late.

Like the on the HC grey from draper, I was sure I was seeing texture of fabric on light shots, with a slight shimmering of light reflection.

Really wanted to get a sapphire sample, but they wont have any for 8 weeks.

The projector is as calibrated as I can make it (from tweaked settings posted by projectorreviews.com),

Re: Draper v Beamax Samples

Set up your projector to display an image of the final screen size from the final projector position.
Get someone to hold the sample swatches where the screen will be.
Make sure your distances and positions are accurate, not rough guesses.
Watch out for moire patterns caused by the 'stippled' screen surface texture on white clouds or bright areas of the image. They're very annoying. The only way to get rid of them is to slightly defocus the image - and lose the benefit of HD.
Hope this helps.
