Beamax Screen Samples vs. Yellow Wall

Got my samples today and stuck them on the wall to compare them, wall is yellow with a mix of white..

Projector is Optoma EW330, 1280x800, 2000:1, 2200 Lumens

From Left to Right, Matt White 1.0 Gain, 1.2 Gain, 1.5 Gain, High Contrast 0.8 Gain

Let me know what you think looks best, even the bog standard yellow wall, when projected just on the wall, the colours are spot on and the whites truly are white, even though it may not show it in the shots below, using the samples I get a purple tint the white though..

Re: Beamax Screen Samples vs. Yellow Wall

In my opinion your best bet is a 1.0 gain matt white screen or at most a 1.2, any more for home cinema and you're going to struggle for true blacks.

It's really difficult to judge a screen by a small sample - even if you have a screen already as a reference.

If you choose to project onto anything other than white (or grey) you're going to have to do a lot of work in calibration and won't get as good result than if you went white or grey. Grey screens are great for contrast and as long as they are a true grey and fit the projectors calibrated greyscale then no problems.

If you're getting tinted whites, it's a symptom of incorrect calibration of the projector and by default gets sorted if you calibrate your pj to your screen, which to be fair you should do - even if that's just setting black level with a Pluge and white level with a greyscale then chosing a colour mode that suits and a colour temp somewhere in the middle..

All things considered, in your position I'd be going with the 1.2 Matt White, and using the pj in eco mode (or similar) if it has one.

Re: Beamax Screen Samples vs. Yellow Wall

Where did you get your samples from if you don't mind me asking?

I've sent a bunch of requests through one supplier going back to December and am still waiting.

Re: Beamax Screen Samples vs. Yellow Wall

Trey asking beamax direct from there website for samples, no my projector does not have an eco mode, I calibrated it for the yellow wall, but setting all levels back to stock still give the pruple white on samples, and still look best on yellow, I am going to stick with the yellow I think...

Re: Beamax Screen Samples vs. Yellow Wall

My Graphics Card contron Panel "Nvidia" allows more control over calibration, but doesn't give good colour reproduction on Beamax Samples, the whites are not white no matter how much time you spend adjusting settings, the yellow wall is still the best option

Re: Beamax Screen Samples vs. Yellow Wall

Thanks for taking the time to do the comparison. I keep thinking I should get a grey screen to lower my black levels as I have such a light painted room and white ceiling, but it really doesn't look good in your photos, are they really representative of wht you saw with the grey?

Cheers

Re: Beamax Screen Samples vs. Yellow Wall

Got to be honest - I'm not convinced you're ever going to get a D65 grayscale or a correct colour gamut with a yellow wall unless you're using a sodium lamp in the PJ

Yes it is a true representation, well you can't really get true but it's what I see, I was also going to go the grey route to until I tested out the samples, you should try the yellow wall to, I painted directly over the plaster board, whitecoat first then a yellow one, it was Leyland Paint, colour was sunset, I shall get the exact model for you tommorow..

Anyway My colours are spot on and the PQ expecially from HD Movies are Amazing, never new it could look this good, but all down to the surface you use and the source calibration, Digital Set Top Boxes/Games Consoles are limited when it comes to settigs, hence thereason I use the PC for Playing back media/games as it has alot more control over the Picture, but FreeSat HD/Xbox 360 look great to, not even using a top of the Line PJ... just nad Ultra Portable Business one.. but that DLP chip produces great colour..

Anyway just got a good deal on a 78" Beamax A Series Velvet, comes with High Contrast Grey Materila which I will replace with white then paint over..

Can you clarify for me what you mean by replace with white, 'and then paint over'?

By the way you won't be disappointed with the screen. I use an A-Velvet screen and they are

I only wanted the frame, as the material is no use to me...

Fair enough. I am considering changing the material on my screen, as I have recently changed my proj. Have you found a good supplier of just the material?
