Re: Beamax M-Tensioned - Where To Buy!

I have ordered an M series electric screen which is about 106" diagonal. Also I ordered a IR remote control.

The M series have a 40cm top border. I wanted a 60cm top border to allow the screen to drop down a bit further (have a 9' ceiling) so it's a special order and will take 2 1/2 weeks. Normally a Beamax screen should come in about 3 days.

The M series are reputably 1.5 gain, but tests show they are in fact 1.3. I got it for a JVC HD350 which is sadly sitting in it's box waiting for a screen.

I also looked at the Eyeline screens from Projector Point which are much cheaper but also have an extended top border.

Grant at Bluestream was very helpful, and said that with Beamax you really don't need to worry about tab-tensioned - they are and stay a very flat screen. I hope he's right.

Re: Beamax M-Tensioned - Where To Buy!

Thanks for that music, I'll give them a ring and see if they can get me a tensioned screen but after your comments I'm starting to wonder if its worth paying the extra to get the tensioning, really want to get some samples of the different gain materials aswell, I'll give them a ring

Re: Beamax M-Tensioned - Where To Buy!

Yeah, I was agonising over whether to get a tensioned screen too, but Grant at Bluestream said the Beamax screens are made from good materials that you don't really need to worry about curl etc. and basically said it's not wirth the extra money. When retailers are apparently not trying to sell me a more expensive product I normally take notice

Users of the Eyeline screen (the much cheaper screen I was thinking of buying) both said that they did experience some curl vat the edges - see the Eyeline thread. But I haven't seen anyone complaining about that with the Beamax screens - but if there are any Beamax users who know different - let us know!

If you are after a vgc 120" screen - there's a guy in the classifieds selling a 120" DRH screen which is tab tensioned (same screens as sold by CRT).

As to gain - know nothing much about it save that some said in the JVC 350/750 thread that 1.3 gain is good and recommended Beam
ax as a slightly less expensive screen to some others (see recent posts over the last 3 or 4 days). Bluestream - who seem to install a lot of JVC's - told me it was a good match too.

Wish I had a 750! Couldn't afford it though.

Re: Beamax M-Tensioned - Where To Buy!

I'm going for a Beamax because that's what was used at the dealer's demo.

He obviously wanted to show off the HD950 to its best advantage, so that was recommendation enough for me.

Good luck.

Sorry, don't know yet.

I have a feeling it was a 1.2 gain A series velvet, but I'll have a chat with the dealer tomorrow and report back.

So your getting a fixed frame.

Im looking at roll-up tensioned - expensive and weigh just under 2x HD350's. Choice is limited, as worried about wave over time on standard roll-up screens.

I would love a fixed frame, lower cost with tensioned cloth, light, i would off bought one by now, but don't have the space. Do i really need a window

Good thing with Beamax is you can return them if not happy, and exchange with no hassles.

Not sure actually as I bought it as a complete sky box from Ebay for around £200 as my Arcam AVR600 didn't like my old Thompson box so I had to go with a Pace one.

Re: Beamax M-Tensioned - Where To Buy!

If you are going to use the screen a lot get the tensioned model. The M series is good, it has a leather grip roller which tries to keep the material evenly distributed along the roller. But it curls in at the edges quite quickly and will develop ripples in the centre of the image eventually just like any other normal electric screen would (except Vu-Tec screen using a Vu-Flex Pro surface). Get the tensioned, for the price they are an absolute bargain. Also I don't understand how someone is cheaper than our avtoad site on Beamax so I'm gonna go find Anton and flog him a bit until the prices are right again!!!!

Re: Beamax M-Tensioned - Where To Buy!

Just to comment re the tensioned side of things, mine's been up for 10 months or so and it's as flat as the day it was installed. I can't remember how much more the tensioning cost, but like a lot of things the quality lasts after the price is forgotten.......

Guys, still mucking about trying to sort out a screen, been busy with everything else lately but now I need to get my projector up and running.

Liam, If I get the Beamax M-tensioned (10607) from you, do I let you know the drop from the ceiling to the bottom bar that is required so you can work out what the top black border has to be.

Also what gain is the screen at for your £1149 price, I take it 1.5, if so how much for 1.0 or 1.2?

Cheers.

It's the 1.5 gain material that tends to measure out to around 1.2 ish. If you want a plush 1.3 gain material I would advise switching over to VuTec with VuFlex Pro material which is bang on 1.3 and doesnt need tensioning. Works out to around £1,400 for a similar size (also on the toad website).

I can't ask Beamax the cost of the different materials because rather usefully they are only available Monday, Tuesday and Friday!!!

As for black drop, they all come with 30cm extra border on top. I would have to request cost for custom drop, which again I can't do until tomorrow!

Cheers Liam, In your experience would a beamax 1.5 wash out the black levels atall, would I be better off going with maybe a 1.2 which will be nearer 1.0?

Could you get me a price please as I was dealing with Otto but he seems to have gone missing in action.

I'd need a top border of around 40cm with say a 1.2 gain screen, also Otto said he could black out the top of the bottom bar of that makes sense, so that when the screen is closed the bottom of the bottom bar is white so to match the case but when the screen is down the top of the bar is black as white can look a bit obvious as kelvin pointed out.

Thanks.

I always use the 1.5 material from Beamax and for a budget material I think it's fine. Unfortunately they are a real pig to get hold of nowadays which only adds to turnaround time on orders and frustration if something is delayed because there is no-one in the Belgium office to chase the delivery! I'm sure if Otto says it is possible then we can arrange for the black bar. As I say I can't find anything out until tomorrow when Tina is in.

I definately agree that Beamax are hard work to deal with, Otto was very helpful to start with then he dissapeared which got me looking at other brands of screen like Harkness, but as I want to order soon I thought I'd revisit my original plan, then I saw that you did Beamax which I thought maybe easier to get sorted than dealing with Beamax direct.

So I look forward to hearing back from you Liam, once you've got hold of Beamax.

Actually can you find out what the total drop is from ceiling to the bottom of the bottom bar for the standard 10607 as it maybe close enough.

It's at least 40cm plus the height of the viewable image plus the 11cm for the casework. Can you email me rather than discuss on the forum cos I think it's frowned upon!!!!
