Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

I would say it IS too good to be true.

I can't tell you anything else about the screen, but you won't get an image like the one shown with that amount of ambient light unless you have an extremely bright projector.

His feedback shows a few completed sales at around the same price all with good feedback.

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

Yeah there feedback looks quite good. might have to have to give it a go.

Theres also This one. But is it really worth over twice the cost. i dont have to worry about ambient light or anything and my walls are very dark so all i really need is a matte white screen that i can drop part way for subtitle-friendly zoomed 2.35. hence the preposterouslly large size

12v trigger would be nice though and i bet the motor is a bit more reliable and quite

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

Hmmm the more expensive one also has 'Programmable adjustable vertical positioning' i assume that means i can programme it to drop to 2.40 ratio automatically rather then the trial and error of the cheaper one.

Thing is im buying a relativaly cheap projector, probablly an epson tw3000 for now but will probablly upgrade to a much nicer one in a year or so i really dont want a cheap screen thats curled at the edges and the motors crapped out!

god this AV stuff is hard work

If one of you guys purchasing one can let us know the quality etc when it arrives it would be appreciated. I am not quite ready to get one as yet but if it is of an acceptable value for money then I might just get one and put it away for later

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

too good to be true??? are you serious?

So for starters, the first picture which everyone sees on search results... has been edited using nothing more than MS PAINT.

All the demo pictures a very poor quality photoshops

The only actual picture of the screen you can see is from the back which is all black.. and the screen looks very very thin as you can even see ripples in it then...

"Ideal of HD and/or DLP projectors" - what, you cant get a HD Ready DLP projector?... the guy doesnt even know what hes talking about clearly.

"approximate dimentions".. what he cant use a tape mesure so he guessed?

Seriously mate, I hope for your sake it turns out good, but I wouldnt have touched this ad even scrolling past the first description. It looks like a complete DIY job and they are clearly far from a professional seller. Fingers crossed I am horibly wrong and you get a bargin!

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

Its very good for the price. the motor is smooth and fairlly quite a little slow but thats ok. The remotes range is at least 10 meters. it hung up easily.

the only problem is it had a few wrinkles in it. you might be able to see them in the photo(if i can figure out how to attach it)the flash shows them well. But after i took the photo i had the idea of adding a little extra weight instead of the clamp and spirit level which cleared it a bit but it needed more even weight across the length (6 curtain weights did the trick and). And now its near perfect

I suspect the problem might be less with screen fully unrolled. but, as you can see i need to move that cabinet off to the side and to do that I need some more speaker wire so i'll have to do that tommorow.

Also the screen stops when you press stop which is a relief because i want to do the zoom-method 2.35 thing.

Now All i need to do is get some velvet to black out around the sides and the wood paneling above and it will be ready for the projector which should be here in a few days

All in all not bad, not bad at all for £150 some modification was required and i have no doubt that a more more expensive screen would not need additional weighting to get it flat. will take more photos when ive got the projector.

Hope this helps

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

Yeh if your handy with bit of DIY its a bargain. but out of the box its way too wrinkled due to the thin material used for the screen and more importantlly the very light plastic rod that is loosely attached to the bottom of the screen.

Increase the weight of the rod, actually attach it to the screen along its whole length. Then you've got yourself a bargain.

My projector has shipped apparentlly so it should be here tommorow or friday. will post pics of it in opperation with some nice bright scenes. im thinking the desert scenes from POTC 3, that should should show any lack of flatness

Hope this helps,

Aaron

apologies for off-topic - but what is the 2.35 zoom trick? Does this lose the side edges?

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

Who's doing "Zoom Method" 2.35:1? - AVS Forum

That will tell you everything you need to know.

Basically you have a 2.35 screen (like in a real cinema) and overzoom the image so the black bars project off the top and bottom of the screen, leaving you with just the film on the screen and no black bars. to view 1.85 or 16:9 stuff you have to adjust your zoom and maybe lens shift to put the image in the middle of the screen which has large black bars either side. so its a compromise. but i want 2.35 films to have the impact and anyway if i really want a big 16:9 image i can just drop the screen the rest of the way and zoom to fit but that would probablly be too big

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

I bought this - 160372871766 - which I take to be exactly the same from another seller on Ebay for 109 pounds delivered.

Hung it on the wall last night and used it with my HD65. To my eyes looks great, motor is smooth with no nasty noises and remote works a treat. Fabric seems wrinkle free.

Worst thing about it is the smell. A real strong new plasticky smell. I'll be leaving the screen down for a few days and hoping the stench fades.

Anyway, for just over a hundred quid you can't really go wrong can you?

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

Thats exactlly what i thought. considering i could find anything even close to that price at the size i need im most impressed!

Im watching star wars on it now. framed for cinemascope without the tensioning i added and to be honest i havent seen the ripples yet so maybe its not as bigger problem as i thought.

Most impressed with the projector experience!!! dwarfs my 46" samsung and no sodding black bars on the top and bottom, heaven.

Will take pictures as promessed next week. need to tidy up first. i had to move alot of stuff around to get the speakers in the right place. Also need some more mats to cover up the wood floor to get the contrast up even more. though i must say its far far better then I expected for a reletivlly budget projector. I expected the blacks to be distinctlly grey.

i think thats the case with all new screens. something to do with the glue that keeps the material supple. it fades after a day or so. very strong tho. i took a big whiff of mine and i nearly fainted

Epson TW3000.

Seemed like the best of the LCD's (can't do cheap DLP due to rainbowing) around the £1000 mark.

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

That also looks like the screen I bought last year off ebay.

To be honest picture is good enough, though I have yet to try out a better screen with my AE2000. Keep thinking about it, but cheapest "propoer" (?) powered screen is much much more..

I think I can notice some patterning when there is a bright white image on screen, but that might be the same with other screens.

Re: this eBay screen looks too good to be true...

Ok ive figured out how to turn the flash off on my camera so some screen shots!.

First one is Watchmen on Blu ray framed at 2.35.
Second is District 13: Ultimatum on Blu ray (The disc i happened to have from blockbuster online today)

Last few are the screen at full height with BBC HD's Life

And one of a 46" LCD for size Comparison

Still need to tidy cables away and reattach the skirting boards i had to remove. And add some velvet here and there to get the contrast up a bit more

Viewable Screen size is 3044mm X 1812mm. I rarelly have the screen at full height though because it lessens the impact of 2.35 films
