DIY Fixed Frame from Old PullDown

Hi,
My old Dalite Model B was starting to become far too wavy for my liking so I built a frame out of timber (sides) and hardboard (front). I cut the screen away from the old housing and Im trying to mount it on my frame over the hardboard but some of the ripples are still there. Ive only just very simply tacked it down using a couple of staples mind...
So, whats the best way to mount it? Should I go round and staple the screen to the frame using many staples or will this introduce more issues of rippling? Or should I use carpet glue spray and stick it to the hardboard smoothing out as I go?
Anyone done this sort of thing before got any tips??

Cheers!

Re: DIY Fixed Frame from Old PullDown

Hi Nat,

It will be very difficult to get it perfectly flat.

That's because the fabric for manual projection screens is not as flexible as the screen fabric for frame screens.

This doesn't mean it's impossible, just that it will be more difficult to get it perfect.

I'll add to this post when I have a bit more time to explain the best way to stretch the fabric with staples. I've never tried anything else, but I know from experience that gluing a fabric-like to a board is very difficult. Air bubbles are hard to avoid.

Best regards,

Otto

Hi,
I bought some carpet glue spray and tried sticking it to the hardboard. Its done an alright job to be honest, there are several very small air bubbles but you dont see them when the movie is playing.
Yeah the screen fabric is not at all stretchy, and stapling it seemed to create more ripples.....

Re: DIY Fixed Frame from Old PullDown

Hi Nat,
I made my own using wood as a frame and canvas for the screen itself.
To tension and fix the canvas, we used a staple gun but also drawing pins! The drawing pins really do work well and have provided an added bonus in that they are used with magnets to fix my temporary borders!
