Thinking of moving to a proper screen (from a painted wall)

Hi all,

I've often wondered what (if any) benefits I would get from moving towards a fixed screen, over the current situation of a flat wall painted with Vogel's Invisible Wall Paint.

The actual screen size is 95" wide, so can anyone offer me any suggestions/advice/opinions on whether it would be worth the move and if possible so links to some screens would be good.

Cheers.

Re: Thinking of moving to a proper screen (from a painted wall)

After reading the description of the Vogel's paint from the link you gave in another post I'm still unsure of the color of the paint. Is it white or is it a light gray?

In general terms I would say that the decision to use a DIY or commercial screen is one of ability, time and expense rather than screen performance.

At it's simplest, a DIY screen can be a painted wall. If one wants to make their own fixed-frame screen then the cost goes up and the ability of the person to build such a screen comes into play and final costs approach that of the less expensive commercial screens.

Commercial screens don't require as much time to build as DIY screens, and offer good performance, but one generally pays for that. Commercial screens also offer specialized versions, such as the Da-Lite High Power glass beaded screen, that can't be done at home.

What aspect ratio do you want your screen to be and what projector are you using? Do you have ambient light when using your PJ? What are the colors of the walls, ceiling and floor of your HT?
