MP3 player, good random play

Can anyone recommend a compact mp3 player (not ipod) that has a good random play/shuffle? Some that I've used have had the problem of always playing the 'random' tracks in the same order (not so random!)
I'll only use it for running so a compact 2-4GB will be fine, doesn't need a screen, just a good random play function and good sound...

Why not an iPod? The Genius feature on the new iPods is fantastic.

Re: MP3 player, good random play

I am no apple fan boy by any sense of the word, in fact I made my first apple purchase 2 weeks back but it always makes me smile when people are searching for functions (9/10 of these posts specify they want a function that the Ipods offer) but they won't consider buying one

The arguments for example sound quality do not cut it for me, if you are playing songs at 320kb with a decent (not the supplied crap) pair of headphones, it sounds great.

Really strange attitudes sometime.

And to the OP, yes, the genius function is fantastic and so quick. Another vote from me.

Re: MP3 player, good random play

I'm only against the ipod as I want to be able to plug it in and stick whatever mp3 files I have on it, rather than go through additional software or itunes.

but will check out the ipod again to see how quick i can get it all transferred and done

thanks

I have never understood this argument, iTunes is so simple to use, far simpler than trying to drag and drop actual files through windows explorer. iTunes IS drag and drop, I honestly don't understand this one.

Re: MP3 player, good random play

I have the 4th Gen Ipod nano for the gym, (because my good old trusty classic is to big) and I have to say the genius feature is fantastic. It seems to pick songs better than I would if I were creating my own playlist.

I don't understand this either, I hated it on my old creative having to drag and drop, I could never keep on track of what was on it, and allways forgot to add songs

With I-tunes I can simply have all my music in 1 place, and me and the missus just create playlists for each of our ipods, (4 in total).

Re: MP3 player, good random play

My one real annoyance with iTunes is the way it displays albums. Is there anyway I can get it to display albums with multiple artists without re-tagging all my files? This situation is particularly bad with compilations.

Also it would be nice if it supported other MP3 players.

Re: MP3 player, good random play

How do you want to view a compilation? I take it you are marking compilations actually as compilations?
