Lame --alt-preset standard ~= Which atrac/atrac3plus bitrate setting

After having the Sony NW-HD5 for a couple more than a week I've started to think that I might be running out of space a lot sooner than I expected...
I'm starting to think I'll need to convert all my mp3s to atrac/atrac3plus soon so I can fit more files in it.

All my mp3 collection is in 192kbs or --alt-preset settings. I want to be able to fit more files on my NW-HD5, without having to sacrifice sound quality too much...Plus being able to use all the sound presets and extra battery life will be cool too.

Which atrac/atrac3plus bitrate setting should I choose so I don't loose a lot of quality? Which atrac/atrac3plus bitrate setting comparable with 192kbs or --alt-preset settings mp3 settings?

Do you think atrac3 132kbps will do the trick?atrac3plus 64kbps?

Maybe the extra compression and quality loss will be covered by some equalizer and atrac sound presets tweaking...I'm also getting a pair of shure e2c too so this maybe will help minimize the downgrade in bitrates.

What do you guys think? All comments welkome!

Thanks.

ATRAC3+ 64K is equal to a bad (non-LAME) 128K MP3 rip.
ATRAC3 132K is equal to a 128K LAME MP3 rip.

It's either that or 256K ATRAC3+ (roughly equal to a 256K LAME rip).

Can someone say something about this? Maybe the equalization tweaking and new earphones will cover for the bitrate loss. (wishfull thinking).

Cheers!

if you have a weak source, you cant tweak for better sound, you can cover up the gaps a bit but it wont improve much. getting better eadphones will, if anything exaggerate the weaknesses in the recording.

I tried making a CD disc in ATRAC3 format to see how well it performed, then found Sonic would not play it. I could find no way of playing it in Sonic, am I missing something here?
