HELP!! MP3's have just stopped playing...

Hi All,

Hope someone can help...and in short time!
I've got about 100GB of MP3's and I use them when DJ'ing.

Last night I had for some reason a whole bunch of MP3 that would seem to load in my player (various ones tried inc Winamp, WMP, Virtual DJ etc) and even though the file looks fine, the thing dont play.

This is the same for a whole file structure!

Ive come back to my master PC (where I have a 200GB drive as a master drive then sync with my laptop for the music I want to use that night) and thats just the same.

I was windering if anyone had seen something like this. I have downloaded and ran them through MP3 checker and they all come back fine. Tried multiple PC's, Multple players, my whole archieve section appears to have gone and I've got a gig tonight!!

Could this be a virus?!? Norton is not picking anything up...
Im really stuffed unless I get these back - all ideas in quick time very welcome!!

Rgds - craigha

oh dear...

wonder if there a few things you can try:

are you sure that the folders the mp3s are stored in are the same as before, eg is your mp3 player looking for the file in the wrong place?

is there any kind of box that pops up telling you any information?

have the mp3s been marked up as read only or anything in the properties that may put a restriction on moving/playing the files?

hi dave

checked the file formats and they are fine.

After some more digging it looks like this may be a corrupt header...but on so many files, i just dont know how to fix them

I foundthe MP3 repair tool, which just spits it out "unexpected error occoured"

Great repair tool!!

Anyone know of any more repair tools or at least a tool to pinpoint whats wrong with these files???

I once had a virus which scanned my machine for files of a certain type, deletes them and replicates itself using the filenames of the deleted files.

You could quickly tell by checking the file size I think.

Update your AV definitions to be sure.

Maybe even visit http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and try Housecall which is a web based AV scan, your Norton install may have been comprimised.

Good luck, if it is a virus, you have my sympathies.
