Question Lossless download tracks / store?

Is there a music store I can download tracks from in a lossless format? Ideally flac, but I suppose if it was something else lossless I could convert to flac.

What do other people do who've ripped everything to flac but want to start downloading tracks too?

Re: Lossless download tracks / store?

Magnatune, Linn Records, Gimmel come to mind.

Re: Lossless download tracks / store?

Thanks but Magnatune & Linn seem very "specialist", i.e. music I've never heard of. I'm thinking of an Itunes or Napster equivalent where you can download in lossless, fairly mainstream stuff, not Classical, Jazz, etc. Couldn't find Gimmel but if it's the same then...

Re: Lossless download tracks / store?

Funnily enough I’ve just been searching for the same thing and this thread came up! I would also be interested to know where you can buy tracks / albums in a lossless format, rather than downloading copies from torrent sites.

Re: Lossless download tracks / store?

At least I'm not the only one then! Anyone else got any pointers?

Surely we can't be the only people who want to do this legally!?!

Re: Lossless download tracks / store?

I'm in the same boat. Usually end up having to download it as a Torrent. Ridiculous that this is not a mainstream option. I would happily pay a fair price for a lossless version.

Re: Lossless download tracks / store?

I have converted all my CD's to FLAC and am now using a music server for playback. I also use an Ipod for listening away from the house. I have only spent about £5 on downloading itunes tracks in the 3 years I have had my ipod as the quality of mp3 is way behind my cd player or the flac files played through the music server. Like a post earlier on - you can buy flac file music or better from Linn which would be ok if you liked the music they sell !

So I am interested in buying say the latest Springsteen album or whatever in flac format but that is not an option at present. Hopefully, as more and more music is not copy protected (flac files have no copy protection), the availability of downloads in a higher quality lossless format will become a reality from 'mainstream' artists.

My gut feeling is that this is several years away, but I can always hope.

Re: Lossless download tracks / store?

OK. I just found this site

http://mgn.musicgiants.com/help.aspx

At the moment it's US only but they say international is "coming soon". Not exhaustive but the music collection is much better than any of the others above. Only Windows format, not flac but at least it's a step in the right direction...

I'm assuming you haven't tried any of the quality russian sites yet
