1-8GB vs 20GB+

Just a quick question for someone looking at compressed music players for the first time...

I notice that some slim ones are 1-8GB and some biggers ones are 20-60GB but similar in price at times, despite very different capacity. I take it the lower capacity ones are flash drive like a USB pen drive and that the others are hard disc based? From my point of view then, I would expect the hard drive ones to be more prone to impact damage and the the flash memory ones would be safer and quieter. Am I on the right track or are they all hard disc and it's just a size thing (smaller unit with less memory costs more?).

Cheers.

No, you're on the right track. Flash-drive players tend to be more expensive, 'cause as you stated, there are no moving parts. However, some hard-drive MP3 players have some sort of shock protection e.g. Sony's G-Protection on their hard-drive MP3 players.
Hence why iPod nanos are so ridiculously priced, when compared to the iPod video.
