Using AA batteries with adaptors for D battery boom box

I have just bought a Harman Kardon Go and Play boom box and it takes 8x D batteries. I read someone uses theres with 8x AA batteries in D size adaptors to reduce weight. This sounds great and I of course know the duration on the AAs will be much less than the Ds. My question is will the output power/ volume be the same using the AAs? This is what will decide my decision. and how much less will the AAs last. Would it last so little time it wouldnt be worth it?
Thanks

List of batteries and their capacities - it depends a lot on the technology employed in the battery

The Sanyo Eneloop AA 2000mAh batteries seem to get the best reviews.
