Apple TV vs Media Center?

When our new home cinema is complete I want to be able to access my collection of DVD's and HD-DVD's from a hard drive rather than using the actual disc.

Firstly how can I backup either DVD's or HD-DVD's to disc (with 5.1 audio)? I was looking at DVD Fab Decrypter but I am not sure whether it does HD discs.

Secondly if all I want to do is listen to music, view photos and watch movies is an Apple TV device a better bet than a full blown media center PC? (I currently have all my music in iTunes anyway)

The only thing I am not sure on is whether the Apple TV can output 5.1? I know that it will play HD 720p but I can't find any confirmation of the audio...

I have a Cat5 point right by the TV so streaming is not going to be a problem.

Although it does have an optical output, the Apple TV does not yet output Dolby Digital 5.1 audio so you're stuck with goold old fashioned Dolby Pro-Logic
