Archos 704tv and dvr station - HELP!

I've just purchased an Archos 704tv and dvr docking station (separately) BUT I cannot set it up on my tv to record and whilst I can view on the tv I have no audio sound.

I have a fairly new tv which has three scart sockets. According to the instructions two have audio/video input and RGB input with one having tv audio/video output and the other having monitor tv audio/video output. The third scart is a smart link which has audio/video input, s video input, selectable audio/video output and smartlink interface. The instructions for the dvr station say that I need audio/video output and on this basis I should be fine using any of the scarts?

I have tried changing the archos setting to RGB, composite and component but this does not appear to make any difference.

The docking station has power, the archos works "standalone" but when placed in the docking station loses its audio but the tv channel changes to whichever AV channel the scart socket is in (AV1, AV2 etc).

I've looked on the Archos site but there are no FAQ's for the Archos TV nor for the docking station so I have sent off a request to technical support for their ideas but having found this site and it appearing that other people are using these successfully thought I would give it a try.

The other thing I did wonder is that the docking station indicates that it is compatible with the 704 wifi and I have the 704 tv - is there a difference and could this be the reason I am having all the problems?

HELP - because I have got the biggest headache and am very tempted to throw the whole thing out of the window. It sounded so good and we plan to load it up with various films, music etc for our holidays but just can't work it out. I am sure it is something really simple.

Regards.

Re: Archos 704tv and dvr station - HELP!

Archos 704tv was from QVC current price is £460 and the dvr station was from Argos £70.

Assume you can't help with my query then?

Re: Archos 704tv and dvr station - HELP!

The archos 704 tv is so recent that the only help so far is a an update v2.

I had one for a day and sent it back as the TV part went awol - Archos were very helpful and said there was a fault and the machine is to be replaced - I really hope all is well with the replacement.

re Docking station and sound - I had a similar problem with the 504 and I phoned Archos who talked me through the solution - Try this and all should be well - Hopefully! If the sound still doesn't work cut your loses and take the sound from the headphone socket.

Re: Archos 704tv and dvr station - HELP!

Yes - I bought off QVC as their "todays special value" and have the extra kit (current price for the same kit is £460) and was aware that the docking station could be brought cheaper online but to be honest didn't want to wait for the sake of a tenner.

Can you remember what the solution was? The reason for asking is that the help desk hours are when I am at work, my work phone precludes 09 numbers and there's little point in phoning when I'm not at my tv/archos unit.

Re: Archos 704tv and dvr station - HELP!

It sounds like you have not got the scart sockets connected up correctly. The TV output should go to the DVR input and vice versa. Note on the scarts they use different pins for input and output so you will have to make sure you have these correctly connected to the DVR. I'd start by trying connecting the DVR outputs to the input scarts on your TV, using the different scart leads you have until you find one which works OK.

Re: Archos 704tv and dvr station - HELP!

Appreciate what you are saying however the two scarts that I am using, according to my tv instructions, are both input and output so should it make a difference? I have followed the "simple" instructions provided in the box and have checked that the cables are in the right holes. Am going to have to try and get hold of the archos technical support desk tomorrow - pity they don't work Sundays (should do at 25p per min - scandalous). It all looked so simple on the QVC demonstration! Then again the archos is simple and easy to use its the docking station that causing me grief.

Re: Archos 704tv and dvr station - HELP!

Firstly, make sure your Archos is set to never turn off the LCD when plugged into the base station before starting any of this. Working with an Archos that keeps switching off the LCD is enough to drive anyone scatty.

I'd start by unplugging whatever working RGB enabled device you've got plugged into your primary TV RGB enabled SCART and plugging the DVR station into that. I am assuming you've got an RGB enabled source like Sky or a DVD player plugged into the RGB SCART and all's working well with that.

Then set your Archos to output RGB and drop it into the base station and see if you can toggle the picture to/from the Archos and TV using the Archos remote. Then try the sound. If all works fine then it could be the other SCART's on your TV have a problem with audio. This could be due to SCART setup options in the menu of your TV. If stilll no sound from the Archos when playing through the DVR then check the Archos audio options to make sure you're not set to output digital audio through the SPDIF output instead of analog audio out. I'd also recommend running two phonos from the audio out on the DVR station to a hifi auxiliary input to confirm audio is actually coming out of the DVR station. Hope there's some help in there.
