anyone recommend portable dvd player

hi, iam fairly new to the site even tho i joined some time ago.
iam interested in buying a portable dvd player for when i have nights out in my truck.
i`ve had a look at a few but very unsure what would be the difference between a good/not so good.
my spend budget is £150-£220 and i would like it to play divx if possible and a fairly large screen

if someone could help on this i would really appriciate it.

Re: anyone recommend portable dvd player

Sorry to butt in, but I have similar interests (we created similar threads at the same time yesterday!). The players from Shinco seem to do everything I'm looking for.

The Shinco players; does anyone know what chipset they use? When it comes to encoding DivX/XviD for playback on them, are there any recommended settings?

I notice that there are a lot of players on the market which offer identical features to the Shinco ones on e.g. Amazon. Are these all based upon the same basic design, but with just different OEM cases?

I bought a Panasonic LS-91 on Ebay. The shops charge £200 I got it for well under £100 and it is the best portable player I have owned and I have had a few. The 9" screen and slim size are perfect for taking away with you.

Re: anyone recommend portable dvd player

I settled for the Shinco SDP-1250 after trying one of those generic Chinese ones off eBay. The no-name eBay job is a piece of complete junk, yet is only just cheaper than the Shinco.

The Shinco is DivX Home Theatre certified, which means that as long as you encode with the DivX Home Theatre profile you are pretty much guaranteed that your DivX video will play back correctly. Thankfully it also does a good job with various other encoding types too.

The Shinco's screen is perhaps its greatest asset - the viewing angles are superb and it is pin-sharp, without relying on sharpness enhancement to make it appear sharper. For a portable player it is probably about as close to reference quality as you'll get. The screen on the Chinese player has appaling viewing angles. Go even slightly off-axis vertically and it varies quickly between dark/black and washed-out/white. I haven''t seen a TFT this bad in years - I wonder where they've managed to obtain them! The Chinese player seems to use some cheap generic parts - all based around a portable TV. When you switch from DVD to Analogue TV to Digital TV to Aux-In it is just like switching between the inputs on a TV, and there is no consistency between the various modules - almost as if they've sourced independent components, and then hooked them all up to separate inputs internally. That probably accounts the extreme bulk and weight. The Shinco in comparison is a real lightweight. With the battery mounted it still weighs less than eBay job alone. It has DVB-t built in but unfortunately doesn't understand frequency offsets, as used in the UK so is useless.

Don't be tempted to buy one of those generic players from eBay. They really are crap.

Go for a Shinco, or go for any other well-known brand such as the Panasonic as mentioned, or even the Logik. The only negative thing about the Shinco is that its mechanism is a bit noisy but I can live with that because overall the quality is very good.

I've got the LS-86. Paid £185 for it back in November from some Panasonic dealer on the Tottenham Court road. Can't shout enough about this baby, just wonderful. Plays everything I throw at it and the battery lasts for ages.
