Problem with recording SKY+ onto Archos 504

Hi all,

Apologies if the answer to this is somewhere else, but I've had a look and can't find anything.

My problem is when trying to record programs off of SKY+ that are on the hard drive to my archos 504 via the dvr unit. WHen recording there is flashing red lines/interference on the screen. I have tried both s-video and composiite outs to the dvr and have also tried routing the s-video tomy avamp and then back to the dvr, still no success. When recording shows real time it works fine. Only when you seem to access the hard drive of the sky + box does the problem occur. I am using a good quality s-video and composite cable.

Any ideas folks?

I am still having problems copying programmes from SKY+ to my 504 too. Seems no one knows exactly how it's done....

Have you tried contacting technical support at Archos just in case it's a known problem?
It could even be a fault in your Sky+...you would need to try recording to a DVD recorder to see if the problem occurs.
I don't understand your statement "I am using a good quality s-video and composite cable" ...you either use S-Video out plus the Red/White phonos for audio...or you use the scart output from the VCR Scart on the Sky+ box which outputs Composite video and the R/L Audio...unless you are confusing "Composite" with the audio out?

There is nothing magic about recording from the Sky+ box...it outputs RGB Video or Composite Video from the TV Scart socket (selectable within the Sky "Services", "System Setup", "Picture Settings", "Video Output" menu)...or Composite Video from the VCR Scart socket...whether live or playing back from the HDD...it is the same.
I don't think the Archos can input RGB Video so you either use the Composite video...or for better quality the S-Video output via the 4pin mini-din S-Video out...with R/L Audio from the phonos.

Re: Problem with recording SKY+ onto Archos 504

Thanks for the replies folks.

What I meant with the cables was that I have tried both s-video and composite cables, both of which are well screened. So interference is ruled out. I have also routed the signal through my Yammy avamp and up-scaled to component output to see if that helps, still no joy. As I mentioned before live recording is perfect, no interference at all. Only when the HDD spins up the interference occurs. I have the latest sky box. My mate's old sky + box does exactly the same so it rules out a faulty box. One work around I have is when I record from sky+ to my Sandisk vmate and then play the recroding back through the DVR it's fine, but that sort of defeats the purpose of having the dvr.

I've asked archos support twice now and they haven't replied, they are worse than useless. Looks like my only option is to wait and get a HDDrecorder and route the signal through this, a right royal pain in the a**e though
