Sony DVP-FX850 and mp4 via USB

I bought a Sony DVP-FX850 complete with USB port hoping I could persuade it to read mp4 files on a flash drive (it's designed to read mp3 and .jpg files). To date, I have failed dismally.

Getting a movie onto the flash drive in mp4 format is not a problem.

Can anyone help me with how to persuade the player to read the mp4 files and play the movie from the flash drive?

I just got the DVP-FX850 today and I am looking around for the region free unlock code for it. If someone out there has this info I would be very happy. LOL
