Help with my ARCHOS AV500

I have just had a Archos AV500 given to me as a present. Ive tried to connect it to TV or DVD player to try and record something on it. Thats where I get lost. I follwed all the instructions (i think) but if i connect it with either the pod or directly to the back of the DVD or TV it tells me its not receiving a signal. It will play videos through the TV but I cant get it to receive video to record. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks
