Archos XS202s hard-drive problem - help needed

Hi,

Having a problem with my Archos Xs202s.

The player works fine as far as I can determine. The problem is when it connects to my PC.

Plug it in via the supplied mini USB cable and the PC recognizes it as a Gemini HDD. But you can't access any folders on it, and the properties say it's got 0 bytes used and 0 bytes available. I've tried copying stuff over to it anyway, and it doesn't work.

I've tried cleaning the USB cable and plugging into different ports but nothing happens. The strange thing is that the Archos still recognizes the songs on there.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm trying to find a spare mini-USB plug to check it's not the USB cable and I'm taking my USB cable into work tomorrow to test it on my work PC to check it's not something with my PC that's killing it.

I don't mind formatting, but I can't even do that - if I right click on the properties tab and go to format, nothing happens.

Are you logged in as an administrator? You maya not have permissions to do what you want? Did you do anything from when you last put music on it to the pc? Change operating systems, media player etc?

Have you tried opening windows media player and seeing if it is recognised in there and whether you can syncronise there?

Ouch..
My XS202S has frozen the last 3times that I used it when I tried connecting it to MP3 speakers (only used it less than 10 times) .
Bought 11months ago from Boots, and am sending it back for a £125 refund

Hope you get it sorted.

All PC's that I tried instantly picked it up, and dropping files was a doddle. Its not a Vista problem is it?

Cheers guys.

Quick answers...Nothing has changed on the PC since I could use it...still same OS, installs, logins, media players...and don't have Vista, have XP.

I think this is going to call for a format, have mailed their tech support people to ask them how to proceed...the strangest thing is that it's the PC that doesn't recognise it, not the Archos, which is still working fine..!

Have you tried connecting it to other PC's? At least you will know where the problem lies for sure if you do that.

I'm taking my USB cable into work and trying my work PC tomorrow. It doesn't rule out the possibility that the mini USB is knackered but it's another thing I can eliminate.

With any luck I can scrounge a mini USB from someone at work as well to rule that one out as well...

...and following on from this, I've tried both a new mini USB-USB cable and two different PCs and neither combination solves anything - it's the same problem of being able to see the drive but there being "nothing" on it.

Anyone else who has an idea other than "format" or "contact Archos" (the latter has been done, am considering the former if I don't hear soon), please feel free to contribute

It's fixed.

Format, followed by reinstall of firmware.

Anyone else googling or coming across this problem, Archos claim you may also be able to fix it by switching the mode from Hard Drive to Windows Media and back again. This has the advantage of keeping your data, though didn't work for me.

Fortunately my MP3s are a backup of what's on my HD rather than the other way round...
