Archos 5 problem

right i basically bought an archos 5 to sell on to make a bit of cash but theres been a problem, The person i bouhgt it off before hand sent no adaptor for the docking station and told me to buy any adaptor, i then sold it on and the person has used the adaptor and claims the machine is now broken, they spoke the archos and they said you can only use their adaptor as the adaptor they used has overcharged it.

Is the whole thing broken or could i just buy them a new battery?

thanks

Re: Archos 5 problem

A little more detail would help, what was the volt/amp rating of the adapter you bought?

What matters here is the voltage, if that was too high then yes it is entirely possible that the unit is damaged and no they can't just buy a new battery as they are not user replaceable.

On the other hand, if the power adapter was not providing excessive voltage then the user may have caused problems for themselves by placing it in the dock without making sure the 5 was actually powered up properly. Leave it like that long enough and you will damage the battery.

Re: Archos 5 problem

The batteries are not a user replaceable item so the official response is it has to be returned to Archos where they will dismantle the unit, replace the battery and charge you a considerable sum for the work. To get a quote you'd have to contact them directly.

The 5 has not been out long enough for there to be much of a market in 3rd part replacement batteries, you may get lucky with one of the many Chinese battery suppliers but the task of dismantling, replacing and reassembling the 5 is not to be undertaken lightly.

Edit: There are a few batteries on E-Bay, no idea if they are really the right size or not though.
