I am looking at a few archos mp4 players on ebay and am asking you guys which model I should go for

I have been looking at 405, 504, 605 and 704

Size is not really and issue, anything from 30 or 40gb upwards would suffice.

Could you guys tell me in what order they were realeased ( ie 405 605 then 504 then 704) and what ones need a dvr, and what ones don`t, as I dont want to buy one, and then find I have to spend £50 more if I fancy recording progs from Sky HD

Look at the last digit for the generation.

So 504 and 704 first, then 405 and 605.

From memory all of those will need a dock if you want to record TV on them.

These are all old products though and a couple of generations behind the new models so check you can get the accessories you need. They are still out there but not quite as easy to get as they used to be.
