Ipod Touch

What are the significant differences, if any, between 1st 2nd and 3rd generation Ipod Touch models? There is certainly a significant difference in price, but is it worth it. I am also looking for good alternatives (for a gift) in 32GB media players, as I really don't want to give money to Apple if I can avoid it.
