Re: archos 5 advice

Hi Paul

Have you had any luck with the lip-sync issue? I have just got around to playing with the ARCHOS and have ripped a DVD to it - on playing it is fine but, if I fast forward to a later part of the film, when it restarts the image pauses momentarily while the audio continues which leads to 2/3 seconds of delay between the two - which is way beyond acceptable!

Haven't had a chance to play it through non-stop, but the first few minutes seem fine as long as I don't fast forward/rewind while watching - which I don't necessarily need to do, but which isn't ideal.....

Had a look on the ARHCOS website, but they suggest switching the device fully off and then on again and, if this doesn't solve the problem then contact their technical helpline......so not very helpful.....

I think the file I used was slightly larger (resolution) that it should have been, so will try reducing some of the parameters in the file to see if that has caused any problems, but was just interested to see if you had solved your problem?

Cheers

Mark

Re: archos 5 advice

Not sure if this is any help to either of you, but one source of lip-sync problems seems to be cured or at least considerably reduced if you do not have the dock connected via HDMI while recording.

Yes I know HDMI is output only so it does not make sense, but it does work.

Re: archos 5 advice

Hi Mark

Thanks for the advice - the problem I have does not involve the dock however. I was using a file conversion programme to rip the DVD to the ARCHOS as an .AVI (MPEG4 I think) file. Set the conversion going and transferred to the device with the supplied USB cable - no dock involved.

Possibly the type of file may be an issue. As I said the resolution was slightly higher than it shoudl have been. But I will try and re-do tonight so the output and input resolution are the same - thought they were last night, but obviously missed something. No idea if that will help, buy hey ho!

Only recorded a couple of cartoons for the kids so far through the docking station and not noticed any sync problems there - but then again, not sure cartoons will be the best for testing this!

Re: archos 5 advice

I seem to be getting lip sync issues with MPEG4 files, but not if I convert to MPEG2 - which is fine I guess as it plays, but I feel slightly cheated that I can't get the MPEG 4 files to work in the same way.

The manual states MPEG4 compatibility with the caveat that some bitrate combinations may not work......which is suitably vague, so ultimately unhelpful.

Does anyone have any advice on what bitrates etc. shoudl be used on the ARCHOS 5 for saving video files? If I can't get it to work properly I am going to have to take it back to the shop or sell it one as it is driving me insane!

Is is the video codec or is it more likely to be the sound format - although I think I have been sticking to MP3 to be on the safe side....

I have the HD/Cinema 3 in 1 pack downloaded - although I am not sure that is an issue.

Re: archos 5 advice

Dragging this up again, does anyone have any sample settings they have used with the Archos5 for various types of files - still getting lip sync issues with avi (divx) files and it is really annoying - experimenting with various bitrates, but not having much luck - help, before the wife gets fed up waiting for me to rip the wedding video!

Re: archos 5 advice

Just as an update (and to aviod doing any work - it is Friday afterall) I think I have the lip sync sorted - and using AVS for video work I seem to be okay with files as follows

MPEG 4 (dvix/xvid compatibile) AVI files - 720x480 resolution @ 1500kbps, 25fps.

I am working on the recorded from TV lipsync. and think that, as well has havng the HDMI removed, by switching the output mode from HDMI to composite might help as well - currently doing testing to see if it works - will run whole film tonight and see how I get on....

Just in case anyone is interested or having similar trouble!
