I'd like to convert my dvd collection into xvid avi files, viewable through both the archos 5 player (screen resolution - 800x480 pixels), and my 32" 720p PAL TV (through my ps3).

I'd like to keep the filesize for each average-length movie to between 800-1000mb.

Whats confusing me is the hundreds of choices for resolution settings. I'd like the output files to still look good on the TV, but small enough to play well on the archos and to keep the filesize low. While searching other forums I found bizarre resolutions being used like 640x360 or 688x384.

Is it a case of setting the width to 720 pixels, filesize to 800mb and letting the software calculate the rest automatically?

Pretty much.

If your source material is DVD then it will virtually all be 720x something with the height varying according to the aspect ratio.

The Archos will play up to PAL DVD resolutions (720x576) so don't worry if the height is over 480 on some of them.

There are a lot of subtle advantages to messing around with the settings but unless you are keen I'd keep it simple.
