Can I point out that according to the BBC political team there are at least 26 unemployed people for every single job in Britain. That did not take into account the regional variations ie there are more jobs per capita in London and the South East and this gets progressively worse the further north you go.
The reality is that most jobs can expect 100 and some as many as 500 applicants.
Some public service positions are advertised but eg the NHS advertise jobs that have already been allocated to an employee already in the NHS. Managers are told categorically they cannot employ someone who is not already in the NHS so all they are doing is moving staff arround. This is why 85%of graduate nurses in the last 3 years are not working in nursing and the % of them now in the NHS is something like 0.5%. Think of the millions of £ that has wasted and is still wasting.
Compound that by all the public sector areas and it means a fair % of the jobs advertised are not there.
If you have a lot of experience and apparently it does not matter what area it is in, you have a chance of an interview, otherwise keep trying but ..... do not get your hopes up.
The point I am making is that you do not have to be shiftless and workshy to have problems getting a job and in fact those who find employment are in the minority. In the report I mentioned at the beginning, they ended up saying that because of the way the figures are calculated the actual number of unemployed is probably between 6-7 million. Not having a job should not mean you do not keep trying but perhaps those of you who do have a job should be more grateful for the jobs you have and stop beating on those who don't, or else change places with one of them for a year and see how you get on chasing non existing jobs.

good posts although i doubt it will change the mindset of the right wing here who will say dumb things like "go to another part of the country to find work" as if that is not happening already.
Grateful for their own jobs? they are far too arrogant for that.

If the economy ever gets to a sound footing(unlikely at this moment i know) then I would advocate copying the Norgwegian system which pays out 87% of previous salary in benefits but only for year unless circumstances are exceptional. This means pressure to get another job is always on but there are very few long term unemployed. The current rate is about 3.4% and the vast majority of those are in transition between jobs .As the benefits are reasonable they wont have to endure any hardship, provided they find work within the year which with a buoyant economy is perfectly feasible

I wonder whether the Norwegian system (I can't read Norwegian) is like the Dutch and that that 'high' percentage has got quite a few conditions attached to it, like you have to have contributed full time for the preceding 5 years ;) It is a post I have made previously which you have ignored.

nothing as draconian as that .You have to have earned what is quite a low , by Norwegian standards, amount over a period of year to qualify. This is avoid foreigners taking advantage of the system.

although undoubtedly it has faults i think its a good system. No doubt the likes of Sidicks will pour scorn and disapproval on it being as they prefer to just throw few crumbs at the unemployed, but i think its excellent

I think you have Sidicks and many of the others wrong there ;)

As I wrote previously I think it is a very good system....Oh and it is a median of the previous 4 years not 5. I never had to use it, but my dad did at a few occasions, and it does remove a lot of the pressure.

So in order to qualify you would have to have worked for 26 weeks out of the preceding 36 weeks for example. Further more you can't get it for more than 36 months (which is too long in my opinion but hey), and if you have contributed for at least a consecutive 4 years it could be extended for another 35 months...First 12 months you'll have a right to look for a suitable job, i.e. one that is comparable to what you've done before. But after the initial 12 months all bets are off and all jobs are game.

In addition the WW would supplement basic income benefit but never to level that was more than if you were in a job. Quite an important distinction. Unless you were below the minimum income.

More importantly, based on the contributions the first two months you'll get 75% with a limit of the maximum daily income (this year it is set at 191.20/day or your previous salary which ever comes first. Then there after it drops to 70%. But as said before, you only get that when you contributed to it in the first place, so if you haven't worked and contributed you won't get it. Effectively it is a national insurance policy.

Sick of your ******** trolling now. Ignore listed, in the hopes that "ignore a troll and it'll go away" is true. I hope others do the same until you learn to debate like a grown up instead of just throwing pathetic little barbed comments around about what you "sense" is some sort of truth, without adding anything constructive to any conversation.

He went back and edited in the bolded sentence after he had made the initial post - the first part of the post was just a reasonable statement of opinion. A cynic might think he was only posting comments like that to wind people up.

I'm convinced that's why he does it, and that's why it's so pathetic - he's supposed to be a grown up, not some teenager bored at half-term.

Part of it is also that I'm tired of constantly taking the bait - if I can't see what the troll has written, I can't respond to it. It's not even amusing trolling anymore, just really, really annoying and predictable, and brings the whole level of conversation down.

la gran siete 01-03-2012 11:45 AM

If one puts it within context of the poll above I dont think its too unreasonable for me to comment that certain individuals will disapprove of Scandinavian system put in place here. The JSA rates are largely inadequate and in many( single people) cases unreasonably so. Bearing in mind the unemployment rate in countries such as Norway we can see that the rate of abuse is much lower.

i cant see where the trolling is but what i will say is that I myself have been subjected to insults and snide personal comments, like being called a hypocrite, on number of occasions,.Completely unsubstantiated of course but i didnt throw my rattle out of the pram as each are entitled to their own opinion and being as I know myself better than anyone here, such slurs have little effect.:)

kav 01-03-2012 11:51 AM

I don't know if you as a person are a hypocrite - how could I? - but your forum persona is undoubtedly designed to wind people up. You even proudly claim it in your sig.

Anyway, I'll leave it there - I mean you no ill-will LGS, so I apologise if I have gotten personal in any posts. I think rather than engaging in discussion with you in future I will probably just bite my (non-forked) tongue. :smashin:

well you can interpret that sig anyway you wish. It was meant to be tongue in cheek being that I was labeled Darth siete by someone here.I found that funny and decided to use it:)
